  1. My GWP developed what I thought was kennel cough, same symptoms only it was persisting longer than normal. By the time I had decided to take him to the vet it was too late, the damage had been done. RIP Brett. A cough very similar to Kennel cough is one of the signs of the lungworm Angiostongylus Vasorum. So please don’t be complaisant and take the dog to the vet. Especially if you live in a high risk area.
  2. Was doing well till the myxie hit about 3 weeks ago. Had 9 ferreting to long nets 3 weeks ago, then 2 weeks ago only had 2 out of 3 nights long netting. Went to my permission last week and hardly a rabbit there found 3 dead with myxie. So that looks like the end of my rabbiting this year. I have never known the myxie to hit so late in the year, it normally hits end of August beginning of September. It also looks as if it is a new strain as the number of rabbits it has killed off is a lot higher than in previous years. New total 1968
  3. There is a down side to all the free information that is available and in most cases is given willingly by some really competent and knowledgeable people on here. The down side is the rubbish that is spouted by some keyboard warriors. Sometimes it is hard for a newcomer to spot the wheat from the chaff. So Mr or Mrs Newbie goes away with what they think is the best answer to his question. Only for them to have been totally misinformed. In some cases the misinformation can be dangerous or even downright illegal, how is the inexperienced person to tell? Then you have the other side of the coin, the person who asks for information. Then when they do not get the answer they want, start telling the person who answered their question that they do not know what they are talking about. Bickering apart, which to be honest you will get anywhere, this site and members on the whole, are here to help each other

    ferrets

You might want to make something like this ferret Hilton. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...hl=ferret+court It really is the last word in ferret courts.
  5. Would it not be better to ask the farmer what crop it is? As he planted it then he should know.
  6. Those that knew only ever did this. But there are the dinosaurs like myself that never used them then and still refuse to use them now.
  7. This is an ideal situation for stinking out the rabbits. Get yourself a bucket and collect as many pine cones as you can. We used to use creosote but as that is no longer available use diesel instead, soak the pinecones overnight in the diesel then stick them down the holes. Try to get them as deep into the warren as you can. There will be no rabbits left in the warren the next day. I have used this in the past with varying results. Some warrens the rabbits never returned to that year, others they were back in there within 2 weeks. So it is not a guaranteed method but can be effective especially if the rabbits have other warrens available close to the existing one. If I was going to try to clear those rabbits I would long net it in the night first, then stink out the remaining rabbits and follow it up ferreting all the warrens nearest to the crater within the next few days after stinking them out. 8. I had the same problem many years ago. So what I done Was ask the FAO to call and tell me what is acceptable for this force. Mine is now bolted to the wall with expanding rawbolts and screwed into the joists on the floor. That is what they told me to do, so no comebacks on me. TC

    death clock

  11. As a now converted GWP owner I would go for the GWP. That said; if you have never trained a HPR breed before get ready for some shocks to the system. The HPR breeds are bred to hunt and hunt BIG. NTTF can tell you they hunt them in Canada where the dog maybe over a mile from you hunting, while you watch on through binoculars. However, it is not really as daunting as it may seem. As soon as a dog finds game it will come on point, and should stay on point till you give the command to flush. When I had my first GWP it was a real shock that all the training methods I had used in the past were mostly redundant, apart from the basics that is. Another factor is the intelligence of the GWP on a dog scale they are up with the top. They will quickly learn new disciplines but just as quickly find bad habits. You have to keep on top of them. They are very loyal one man dogs, but still enjoy being one of the family. They do not take to abuse well, ie: if you shout at them they will sulk and it could take a good two weeks to make up the ground you have lost. If you were to lose your temper with one and just for example give it a clip that could set your training back at least a month. All that said, I would not have a different breed of dog now. Once you have them working for you it seems that they will take to a new discipline as if they have been doing it all their lives, within a very short period of time. From retrieving on a marsh, ferreting and rough shooting they seem to excel in every thing they do. The one I lost this year to lungworm was even picking up on a shoot, and even wiping the eyes of a few retrievers. There is only one job I would not like to do with a GWP and that is beating it goes against all the dogs’ natural instincts to run big. I tried it once, and the dog ******** off to join the walking gun and retrieve the birds for him. I cannot tell you anything about a GSP as I have never owned one, but I have tried to give an honest insight into the GWP. TC Edited to add: It takes me so long to type a post I usually forget what I wanted to say. Vis. The aggression towards other dogs, neither of mine has displayed this trait. However, they will not back down if a dog becomes aggressive with them either. In fact I have found both of mine to be very well balanced when confronted with a strange dog. Personally I think it is how you socialise the dog when it is a pup. get that right and you will have no problems with other dogs. Again that is said for dogs meeting on neutral ground. The GWP can be and mostly is very territorial. But if introduced properly they will integrate with any other dog on their own territory. As you are contemplating a pup you will not have any problems on that score. TC
  12. So did I, till I read that post. TC
  13. Spot on :look: To paste into paint use control and V
  14. The last one was a canned hunt, the father of the boy that shot it, paid for it to be released into a pen so his son could shoot it. Sorry not my idear of sport. In fact I find it quite abhorrent. TC

    Religion

My personal opinion, is that without religion, your 2p would have earned you a death sentence as there is no reason nor control for anyone to act other than to procreate or do as they will and therefore I could and would be only answerable to myself and if that meant I was better off than you and you were hurt or worse, then so be it. Basically as savage and unrelenting as the animals in the so called wild. Not a dig TC but an analogy. Fair comment Henry. However, if you look at my opening paragraph I clearly state that in my mind one of the main reasons that religions were created was to "provide law and order where ther was none". Furthermore I did not single out any religion, for the reason that I believe that they are all the same, just dressed differently. If you think that religion has prevented the suffering of the weak at the hand of the strong then I politely suggest you think again. Religion has always been used by the powerful to control the masses. However when you have a corrupt head of any religion who is only there for their own gratification. Then you have a recipe for mass manipulation of people for the good of one person. The basic tenets of all religions are good, that goes without saying. However, the big problem comes in when man takes over the running of those tenets, by nature man is self-serving, it is in us all. (Our one mission on this earth is to procreate and ensure the survival of the species. Once we have done that, our job is done and basically we are surplus to requirements.) So if a man in a position of power is able to use religion to further his goals in life, he will! He will not care how many people he has to tread on to get the goal he seeks, he will do it. The biggest problem with religion is mankind they corrupt and defile everything they touch. Another 2p's worth. TC

    Religion

Religion had a duel role when it was created. To provide law and order where there was none, and to give people hope of a life eternal when they die. Most people cannot accept that we are just animals and like all animals we have a finite life. They wanted more, what a scammers dream religion is!! "I can promise you an eternal life if you will be good, do as I say and live to the sets of rules that I have provided." That must have been (pardon the pun) a God sent to the primitive people who were given this message. Everything that goes wrong you can blame on the devil and everything that goes right you can thank god for. For each religion there is a different history, but when looked at closely most have the same message. Control by fear. Fear of dieing, fear of being excommunicated, fear of eternal damnation they all add up to a pretty potent control factor. Why? Because death is the ultimate unknown. Naturally people are fearful of it, so what a great control implement that is. You promise someone Val Halla when they die and they will lay down their lives willingly. Believing in their eternal salvation. You tell them that there is nothing after death and they will tell you to get stuffed! Religion was created I believe by people who could see that there was a need for something to control the masses. However, I do not believe they even for a second thought how powerful it would become. My 2p TC
  18. Cracking read as usual Ollie. Well-done young man sounds like a day full of fun. I must add your planning and thinking on the hoof, is first rate. You are thinking like a hunter, covering eventualities that may or may not occur. Now get yourself some long nets. Pm me if you’re interested and I can point you in the right direction. TC
  19. 5 last night with the nets. New total 334
  20. Had 54 between long netting and ferreting so far this year. New total 211
