  3. Your all right guys Mentoring is a bag of worms sometimes BUT I've just finished a mentoring of 18 months starting from he had a 22 rimmy, started out on rabbits right through to removing 20 odd foxes and he's now grassed five deer and can gralloch to Dsc 2 level, the guy has had no easy run from me start to finish but he has a respect for wildlife which is to me very important All in all he's done well in 18 short months, taken in everything I've shown him and really enjoyed it, Brilliant lamp man and driver and his rifle safety second to none, it wasn't without its trials and tribulations and kicks up the backside on occasions On completion of his evidence portfolio, he's now got a open ticket for expanding ammo and rifles .22 LR .22 WMR 222 and .243 Complete set up and I would have him shooting alongside me anytime ( I wouldn't tell him that though) he's really turned out to be a real decent rifleman with a respect for wildlife. Ticked all my boxes, on safety, rifle use, etiquette, and I got him a slot this year in a stalking syndicate so the 18 months has been worthwhile for him and I've picked up a decent shooting mate Mentoring isn't new really, I had the same from the guys I grew up with showing you the right way to carry on, they didn't have a posh name for it then, When he handed in the book to his feo, he went right through the lot, rang me up and signed off the whole lot with no conditions there and then, it's got to be the way to go. 4. Guys Nailed it - Huge dog fox - 240 yds 50 grn BT .222 with a 6.5 photon NM 800 IR dropped to shot poa 1" high. With no wind Worth the long wait laying on me gun bag since 21:00. Shot came at 00:15 Lol - thermal worked a treat on finding it Really pleased that ones out the way, been playing havoc for a few weeks Good luck guys Patrol
  5. Hi WM What a cracking week you've had, well done Sir I'm out tonight for a recce on this dog fox that has given me the slip on three occasions, got a nice light breeze here at the moment that will be of help later hopefully Patrol
  6. Gotta a fox giving me the run around seen it three times in the thermal, it's laying up in a copse heavy with briars very thick impenetrable Looks like an all nighter on a seat , sticks, thermal and the 222 and hopefully no rain - watch this space, going to have a. Look Monday night It's coming out all over the place, size of it, looks like a decent sized dog fox Patrol
  7. Same here tonker, I ain't gotta a clue how to put pics up. It's scary Mary for me, Knowing my luck I'd probably send em to someone who don't like em Lol Patrol
  8. Oowee Ways to go here, some barley lightening up now, majority still growing New load of birds Birds ( chickens ) due in two weeks time next door At least I've got a chance to nail a few more before that happens it'll keep the losses down, you know what young birds are like they'll jug up in the grass, perfect for a Charlie meal instead of going back to the shed Had some really good shots with .222, really nice to have some clear fields to work. Up the shoot Thursday night, see what's lurking about, game crop is well on now and standing crops, if you don't go you won't know Had a couple stealth cameras out on two clear ride areas, be interesting to see what's about Patrol
  9. Cracking night out tonight, just got in 2 dog foxes and two well grown on Cubs, both vixens. What a difference the weather makes, see seven only four had a shot on, the others were either distant or browy or no back stop, the Cubs come in to less than a hundred on a mouse sqeak Out on a fairly new permission tonight only second time out on here, next to a free range chicken farm, it's all been cut for silage less than a week ago, Patrol
  10. Geese don't show out as well as a furred animal, probably due to heat placement, feathers I guess a fox stands out pretty well in amongst domestic geese, as another send the geese will lead you to the fox I use the pulsar hd50 TI Patrol
  11. Weather is a lot lot better tonight, grassed so far 2 Cubs and dog fox, seen another but it scarpered when the .222 cracked one out on the dog fox They are or appear so more easy to call In with decent bit of weather, the dog fox according to the range finder 190 yds clear as day with n870 and a pulsar x850 IR (half open) no curtains crystal clear Patrol Four Cubs and dog fox final tally, packed in at 04:00 hrs no signs of the vixen or any more Cubs Work in progress as they say
  12. I've been using the hornady 30 Grn for 100 yd foxes and the 25 Grn for rabbits yo 110 yds really nice crisp round, just got another 500 had no problems with both rounds - decent bit of kit Patrol
  13. Long term control I use drop traps dug in 2 feet in the fenceline, the ones I use are galvenised steel with a padlock bar so they can be truly locked shut and cannot be set to catch by anyone else As long as you install them correctly and use and monitor properly as traps they are awesome rabbit level controllers. I live in Kent if you want to borrow one your most welcome Other than that, I use mk6 fens set in the burrows covered over with mesh and back filled to stop any re entry or digging with traps pinned outside the burrow visit every day pull the trap out with the lanyard with rabbit in reset recover burrow start again Takes awhile to dig in thirty traps , but the trapped rabbits are worth 3:00 quid each so it's really worth doing Good luck and a drop trap is here if you want one pop over and pick one up Cheers Patrol

Hi Marmite Are they running off samphire hoe yet or the Admiralty Might take a day out, try for a couple on samphire in the week Patrol
  15. I'm quite likened to the " don't turn up for a work party then don't turn up for a shoot day. I reckon it would work on a majority of the guns, yep you will get the stalwarts who will thwart at the first hurdle by stating "I pays me money" so I should shoot every day in all honesty you can do without em. The wish. A full bunch of safe, sociable shooters, who love work parties there's always two three in each syndicate, so why can't you ever get a full team of decent people ?? I bet there would be such a team if carlsberg run a shoot ( lol) Cheers Patrol
  16. I take it you have no access to NV I sometimes use a light that has a PIR and a stand alone lamp on which I place a red film over the front of the glass I place it close to the known route and ensure it works by putting a stealth camera nearby Bait the hot spot with a metre wide cross of cat food Let him get used to the cat food and lamp going on and off Keep baiting it up so the bait is small in size but a metre long cross and he has to be in the area a while to clean it up Get the best visit time off the stealth get there an hour earlier and place yourself in a favourable wind position where you have a backstop, get the flask out and wait kaboooomb job done
  17. .222, 50 grn. 243, 100 grn 6.5x55,120 through to 165 grn . .308 120 grn through to 165 grn All soft point, all complete the job famously, I shoot all these calibers, for deer stalking the 6.5. Or .308 , both are fantastic accurate rounds Whatever suits you in what you wish to achieve is the one to go for, the all rounder and bullet weight variance is the .308. I go to this over the 6.5 when out on fallow bucks or bigger just in casey it will drop anything in this non euro state. ( lol) Good luck Patrol
  18. I've had a WMR for a few years now, I shoot out to a hundred with ease on rabbits and foxes and a clean kill is the norm, it does drop off after a 100 yds so the 100 is my benchmark for it. Round wise I'm using for foxes Hornady 30 grn BT and rabbits 25 grn Hornady BT. Both perform faultlessly, the only downside is a little residual powder occasionally after each shot may occur which is easily dealt with. Overall quite a quiet round with enough punch to a 100 yds My weihrauch is very very accurate with both rounds, really under estimated caliber Patrol
  19. Very good idea re work party attendance to shoot days attendance It's unfortunately same old same old 1 work party I was on recently one of the guns turned up with his kids who got in the way when using the saws and strimmers he didn't do a stroke just walked around and done absolutely nothing all morning You got a know when your beat. Lol Patrol
  20. Hi Foxhunter Yep got him and a vixen 2 hrs later 100 yds away further down the bank Also see another 400 yds away that just melted into cover never to be seen again Gotta say the rain man has got one on him at the moment around here It was very wet last night out of the 6 hours four of them was pouring down with rain, it does help concentrate the fox activity providing I've chosen the right spot. ( lol), had about an hour walking around with the .222 and thermal spotter off sticks which got me onto the second fox, really good night out. I've made a rain shield 16 " deep and the width of the window in heavy duty canvas ( 2 sides and a top) I put two flat bendy but stiff 16" flat galvanised bars running from the inside the door around the bendy bit and out 14" so the edge turned down on the canvas, two heavy duty clips on the bottom of the two sides, not a bit of water came in, all the kit was bone dry and still operating through the rain which although cuts the thermal back a bit it's still business as usual, really pleased with it, going to tweak it up today and keep it in the truck for the wet nights, Patrol
  21. Nice pics Two good subjects as well, each has its own characteristics Patrol
  22. Yep I'm out now in the truck laid up alongside a hedge with a big valley in front, according to my stealth camera video there's a huge dog fox coming through the gate at the bottom on route to the hen house on top of the hill at the farm, three times this week from 12:30'through to 03:00 I'm waiting Patrol
  23. Yep It's all about being at the right place the right time. I spend a lot of time watching and use stealth cams to give a helping hand The old fox is probably one the best quarry species out there at times they can give you the run around, he's only gotta think your after him and he will melt away not to be seen for a few days, that leaves you a few blank nights and the night you ain't there he turns up as normal. He's got his own set of field craft rules, he just don't spread the word very easily Cheers Patrol
  24. Hi WM Kit N870 pulsar on QD mounts with 3 different rifles set up on it The XT photons on the rest, WMR and LR Pulsar XD50 thermal on a landyard, also have a 12" TV screen (12v) in the truck with a tilt and pan the TI fixes to the tilt and pan and connect it up to the TV when laying up in an area, really decent bit of kit, cracking detection picture on a long haul takes the strain out of it Cheers Patrol
