killer_pigeon
went to a gunshop yesterday and the bloke behind the counter was just a complete condasending ***, treating me like an idiot. Anyway i wont buy anything from him on principle now even though he had what i wanted. I already bought a good Leupold 4-12 X 40 scope, but he said it would be no good on 17HMR as the zoom would not be adequate. Is this correct or is he talking pants. If he is correct what type of scope would i really need. Thanks
Zapp
12x should be fine out to 150 yards. ZB
Killjoy
I have a 3-9 X 40 on my 17 HMR and in fairness to him mine is massivly inadequate, im looking for something with more mag now... A 4-12 X 40 would be better obviously but im looking at something more hopefully which can be placed on a larger calibre in time, look at it like a long term investment... al4x
It will be fine on it, but if you like plinking and seeing the holes at 150 yards more mag is useful. Also depends if you shoot mostly at night or during the day, at night you don't tend to wind the mag up that much whereas in the day it is quite nice to be able to
killer_pigeon
I was really intending to use it as crow, squirrel and rat killer through day and bunny killer at night so i thought it would be a good allrounder and mag would be sufficient. al4x
use it and it will be fine for all but the longer shots, I rarely turn mine up past 12x its just nice when you're zeroing or taking a longer shot to be able to do so
shaun4860
i have a 6x24x56 on mine and find it great for all ranges... shaun
MC
I agree with Al4x, I have a 4 - 14 x 56 on my HMR and it is set on 10x all the time, unless you are shooting from a bipod over 10x makes holding steady a nightmare.
cleaner4hire
best way to find out if its suitable is to go out and try it. Everyone has different expectations/needs from scopes, Ive been through a fair few scopes now trying to setttle on what i like - getting there slowly saying that x12 should be enough for <150 yds
Teal
I have a 3-10.5 zeiss on my HMR and it does all I want. Unless you're shooting lots of targets your scope should be fine.
cooter
I had a 4.5 - 18 on mine and it was fine as I mainly shoot on 10x. I now have a 4.5 - 30 on it, as I do a lot of long range shooting, but still use the 10X for most of the shots. As already said, it helps to save your legs when zeroing, or shooting long range targets, but I also identify targets clearly after finding them with the bino's, so a little more mag can help. Salop Matt
50+ at the front personally is a big advantage for shooting in low light etc. And what i would recomend ! Brand depends on how many pennys you have to spend but i am a self confessed fan of MTC value for money i am very happy !
Nelly T
I had an 8x56 on my HMR to start with which was crystal clear, point and shoot as no temptation to dial in the mag and sharpen focus with parallax, great under the lamp, tough to beat out to 100 yards for headshots, much past that (most shots are not) and the ret begins to obscure the bunnies head, you can still shoot at the boiler room but then lots of damage (perfect if you not concerned about meat damage). I now have 6.5 - 20 x 50 on top and it is very nice indeed, at night i leave it on 10x and it is very useable and clear. I bet if you asked most people on here what magnification their scope is set at when they take it out of the cabinet it will be in the 6-12 range. I can only imagine using the extra mag on the occasional long shot 125 yard+ or if you set up in the day and wait for bunnies to appear, for me most likely when the scope eventually ends up on a CF. Unless you pay £1000+ you will find on most scopes that past 15x mag it is hard to use in the field, eye relief and exit pupil makes the slightest head movement lose the picture and sometimes just finding your target with the smaller field of view is tricky. For what it is worth, my advice is pay as much as you can for the glass and dont think that you have to have x24 mag range, by the time you have ****** around with parallax and mag chances are mr rabbit is tucked up safely in his hole! keep an eye on the forums and maybe evilbay for quality 2nd hand scopes. tweedledee
i have an eb optimate 6-24-42 waiting to go on mine but i bet i`ll never go above 10 mag.it`s hard getting a scope that does n`t white out in the higher mag ranges.get yourself a good clear scope and don`t overdo the mag and you ll be fine. Glensman
Thanks for all the replies, i will keep my scope definitely and use it on the HMR. thanks for all the advice Stick with it mate. I'd say it'll be grand for the job. People have a serious tendency to over-magnify these days.
ProteuS
I have a 6-24 on mine purely because i bought it many moons ago when i wanted an adjustable parallax, mil dot scope for my air rifle. To be quite honest it's hugely overkill. I never really use it above 10, and often have it down at 6. It can be fun to use high zoom with the bipod, but it's more of a novelty. on my 22 i have a 1.5-5 and think it is absolutley super for the job.
