Are 7 1/2's ok for pigeon shooting

Recommended Posts

Most of the time when decoying i use a 20g ou. Almost all of the time i have a 24g 7.5 in the first barrel and a 28g 6 in the other. If they are decoying well i have the 24g 7.5 up both. I find them very effective out to 30 yards, anything further than that and you will get some runners. Not ideal but if you have a dog returning them to hand the coupe de grace can be delivered without too much suffering. Similarly if i use the 12 gauge i will usually have a 28g 7.5 (eley first) up the first barrel and a 30g 6 clear pigeon up second. I have never really found myself chewing on too much lead.

Last saturday as an experiment i tried a box of 7.5 28gm Eley blues on the woodies.I stuck the decoys slightly nearer me because i was bit apprehensive about their killing range, but they dropped cleanly at about 25yds.Normally i use any brand of 32gm 6's which i find perfect, but i cant deny the clay cartridges certainly did the job.

They didnt appear to be as effective on crows and twice i had to quickly pop a 32gm 6 into chamber to finish the job. However, this may have been just a poorly placed shot (likely!) or maybe the IC choke i was using in Escort.

The thing is i told the fella at the shop that any cartridge was ok as im trying some different ones out at the moment but he said what am i shooting i said pigeons but im sure he said "what clay pigeons":good::hmm:

the cartridge he gave me was (eley first no7 1/2's, 28 gram)

Are these ok for pigeons ?

I have used them decoying once before and had ALLOT of walking wounded. I wouldn't use them again unless I was shooting at real close, decoying birds using a tight choke .

I been shooting pigeons for 40 years shot 1000's shot them with 9,s since the late 70,s only shot 7,s or express 7.5,s

Those who say you want bigger want to learn to shoot.I heard this **** about shot size for pigeons for years.

I would not use anything else .1/2 chock 7.5,s no runners.
