groach1234
Okay i was scanning the garden/field near my house for rabbits and spotted some bright green eyes staring back at me from the hedge at the edge of the garden. Now is there a general rule for eye colour? im thinking wild cat or possibly a small fox there is because the eyes were close together sugesting a small head to me their is no way, no how they were rabbits but by the time i had found some binos to get a look they were gone so what do you think? Billy.
Could be anything. A light can catch different areas of the retina, causing different colours to be seen... Green isn't usually a colour associated with mammals though, as they can't create that pigment. Were they predatory eyes (facing forwards, stereoscopic) or far apart, like prey would have? It just goes to prove the statement about never shooting at a pair of eyes! Edited October 13, 2009 by harfordwmj

Billy.
I have green eyes They're not actually green... I'm sorry to say! See below the study notes to justify this. "Green eyes are produced when melanin concentration in the front epithelium is of low concentration. The light reflected back off of the front epithelium appears faint brown, but light is also allowed to pass through to the stroma. Fine collagen structure in the stroma scatters light much like the contents of our atmosphere scatter the sun's rays (Rayleigh effect), reflecting back only blue light. This blue light when added to the predominantly red and green light being reflected back by the front iris epithelium produces what appears to be a green iris." Billy.
Very clever... I don't think mice that have been artificially impregnated with ultraviolet pigment counts... However it was a valiant effort

Alpha Mule
What sort of bulb was in your torch? I have a head torch that has a bright white beam or two blueish wide angle low power types. When I have the two blues on, some of the stuff that reflects back at me is weird.
