Nel
Everyone is crying out about saving red squirrels. At my inlaws farm there were loads of them. They are great little critters to watch if a little curious for their own good. The farm is also home to about 12 breeding pairs of buzzards. The whole area is packed with them. On TWO occasions i have seen them taking squirrels. I have not seem a squirrel for about a year. As I understand, you cant shoot buzzards whish seems strange inthat people are desperate to keep the red squirrel in the UK and they are denting the population so badly. I wish ***** Oddie was still on Spring/Winter/Summer/Autumn/Thursday Watch...I wonder what he would do (disclaimer: I have not shot any buzzards & dont intend to)

kev 1
fenn trap. As far as i am aware you cannot interfear with any of the above wildlife,as they are not classed as vermin.....and are protected..

Chard
******* right they're protected. This cockheaded **** sounds just like what that retard from the pigeon fanciers organisation posted on here trying to drum up support for getting Peregrine Falcons "culled" . If you want to spout your poisonous ****, aim where it should be aimed - at ******* grey squirrels. As for Fenn Traps, it's clear to see what is going on in some parts of the country and for those too moronic to see, that's the kind of **** that will ensure that any scrap of support that shooting enjoys from Joe Public will evaporate overnight if that mentality is tolerated. And that will include my support Edited November 15, 2009 by Chard

anser2
Buzzards and red squirrels have lived togeather for thousands of years in this country so their is no reason for buzzards to cause the demise of the red squirrel. Yes they will take the odd red , but thats just the balance of nature with the predators taking out the weaker squirrels. The real problem for red squirrels is the greys competeating for living space and infecting the reds with a disease which does not effect the greys. Bobo Fen traps are for ground vermin only and anyone who uses one for raptors deserves to feel the full force of the law. If anyone here knows of anyone who uses them for raptors , shop them to the law or the idiots who carry out this pratice will help bring about the demise of shooting. suburban shooter
Buzzards are helping us by killing greys in parks and woods that we can't shoot in, they also predate seagulls which are becoming serious predators of other birds, my son saw one chasing a kingfisher for two minutes up and down the river in Durham last week, kingfisher only just made it. Also if we shoot all the foxes something else has to keep the wabbits in check cos Hornady can't make enough .17 HMR ammo to keep up !!
scotslad
I think some of u may be getting ur RED and grey squirells muddled up, or atleast i hope so. The OP clearly says RED in the post. Sorry to say it but the red squirrels are on the way out, i doubt they'll survive in my area past the next 10yrs, and my area is concsidered a stronghold for them. over the past few years greys spreading all round the area Really don't get this whole BoP thing, yes there beautiful birds, but so is a fox or a pheasant/duck. Why is it ok to control with venom some predators but not others when the population allows? Look at the way we treat rats/mice foxes or rabbits. EN were found guilty in court of not issueing enough licences to control buzzards, even when the guidelines were met, Coramarants are shot on licence regularly and both Canada and Greylag gesse on General Licence yet buzzards out number them all and are fully protected. Makes no sense It is a joke that many protected staus's are never reviewed, buzzards, badgers and pine martins to name 3 notable species. And all can have a very negative effect on local boidiversity where numbers are locally high. I imagine the PM will kill the last Capercallie in next 10yrs too It has been a long time since i have seen a kestral and u rarely see them in places of high buzzard numbers, and before anyone uses the farming/habitat loss card most owl species in this area are thriving and eat the same stuff, live in similar habitat
