George1990
Went on a walked up shoot wednesday, quite chatty and good to know where the other people are beating, so didn't have me ear plugs in for the first time in ages. Always thought it was a foolish thing to do but had a lapse of caring. Now when I whistle or someone talks loudly at the right pitch my right ear rings pretty loud, which isn't good. Hope it isn't the start of tinninninitus or whatever. Hopefully it'll go away. So there you go. Don't shoot without earplugs
badshot
Old age has caught up with my old chap too, he has to wear a pair of "hearing aids" which emit a noise to counteract the ringing from his tinnitus. Yet I still forget to put ear defenders on in the workshop sometimes.
Ali-C
I've got tinnitus in both ears now, and I'm only 17! Don't shoot without plugs/cans, cos it will damage you hearing fast!
libs
I shot 20odd carts without protection in one session and for 3 weeks after I had a vague ringing in my left ear that eventually faded thankfully. It should go away, but let it be a warning to you, as it was to me, that there is never an excuse not to use plugs/muffs/both.
Tobyb525
Only ever let off two shots off without plugs as I had the phone on loudspeaker on my lap, never again, was like a flashbang going off in my face

Cookiemonsterandmerlin.
I have loss my hearing in my left ear lucky dont sufer with ringing I nealry failed my medical for the resevists I dont know why as when you load aircraft on the pan you wear eay defender anyway so you cant hear **** anyway. I have shot thousands of rounds though the SLR and then SA80 in my early service life. They make you wear ear denfender on the ranges but then in combat you cant . Still it a good exsuse to not hear the wife you doing the washing up . And yes it is the start of tinninntus good luck and keep your ear protected in the future as you can help slow the down the problem as I have had one friend who had to give up shooting because of it. utectok
I am always surprised why I'm the only guy on my shoot who wears ear protection! I've asked and they say they only bother on the clay range It seems mad to me.
flytie
My dad insisted that I wear hearing protection from the first time i ever used a shotgun. He had his hearing damaged in the services and had bad tinitus all the time, it really got to him at times. I think the sensible option is to wear protection, and ear defenders/plugs too ft
burntout
Folks should really take more care of their hearing. At 16 I developed Otosclorosis which is essentially hardening of the bones in the ear which led to me gradually losing my hearing. I was around 80db down in my left ear by 19 which is a huge loss. Being 19 and having to wear a hearing aid is a difficult prospect and my confidence took a huge knock and I started going into myself. Following two operations (stapedectomys) where the Stapes is replaced with a little man made piston, I fortunately gained the majority of my hearing back and have been enjoying even the most annoying of sounds in reasonable stereo ever since - I'm now approaching 27 and am pretty much a cyborg - like the million dollar man! Whilst this little insight into my life may seem random, the point I am trying to make is it should be considered a blessing to have good / perfect hearing and you should f#cking (jolly) well look after it where possible - so please wear defenders. Failing that, pop some ear plugs in and wear them all day, at work, on the bus etc to get an insight into what your life could be if you dont. I get equally annoyed with my fellow motorcycle riders who dont wear plugs. Edited December 7, 2009 by burntout

humperdingle
I must admit i've been guilty of not wearing hearing protection at times - More due to laziness! Now I get a "Crackling" in my ear whenever somebody close-by is opening a bag of crisps, or ... When I go for a leak, and it splashes into the water in the pan... (!) No real loss of hearing per se... Just these unwanted "Extra" noises! I know it'll probably only get worse in the future.
steve_b_wales
I've had Tinnitus for the past 30+ years. get's worse when I have a head cold. Too late to do anything about it now, but I would recommend everyone to have some form of hearing protection when using shotguns/rifles. Dunkield
i must be the luckey one i never wear them, i seem ok, shooting now four 46 years, and had no trouble at all. Pardon! I don't think you are lucky, unless your ears are packed with wax, I think you must be partially deaf -unless you have had your ears tested recently you may not realise how good/bad your hearing actually is. Topical subject, beating at the weekend we were stood around after the last drive having a natter and there was a screaming in the distance from the woods (turned out to be kids messing about) The under keeper is 20 and said 'did you hear that?' I heard it clearly, but out of maybe 10 other people, all shooters or elderly, none of them heard it When we were pig shooting a couple of weeks ago, you realise how important good hearing is, you hear pigs in the woods way before you see them, with duff hearing you would be seriously handicapped. Steve29
How do you wear ear defenders and hear pigs in the woods still? I have an odd noise in both my ears constantly, sounds like a quiter version of rain on a conservatory roof! When I first noticed it it was that bad I had to leave the telly on so I could fall to sleep. Now its much better and I ALWAYS wear ear defenders as I don't want it getting worse. Something I have been told is that your hearing can still be damaged if you use the in-ear type hearing protection as the noise can damage your hearing by penetrating around your ear. Not sure how much truth there is in that but it makes sense, so I always wear full ear defenders. Can't be too careful!
monkeymagic1969
How do you wear ear defenders and hear pigs in the woods still? Electronic ones -They are brilliant and you can often pick up noises that you maybe would not hear normally. They may be expensive ( apart from the ones Aldi did for a tenner - cheap but very good), but what cost should you put on your hearing - have have tinnitus and its bloody awful, i have took to wearing electronic defenders now to try and stop any further damage.
