vole
As above,to the casual rough shooter, does that extra 1/4 inch make an appreciable difference does anyone think? Often thought about it as I do use them on occaision. Thanks very much.

henry c
I think its just got less wadding in. Theres a few 3 inch cartridges out now that are only 36 gram loads, I cant really see why manufactures put a relativley light load in a magnum case? njc110381
A lot of field type cartridges are 2 1/2" to allow them to be used in the older side by side guns that the toffs use. I find they work fine
Paddy Galore!
no difference really had some eley vip's and they kill better than clear pigeon, apparently they're a soft load and not too fast but i thought they were fine. babka3487
As most of the 2 1/2 inch carts are the premium ones (supreme game, high pheasant, vip's) I would expect them to be better? Blackpowder
Most people in my syndicate and club, the latter both pigeon and pheasant seem to be using 2 1/2 inch cartridges. As a side by side toff I find the humble clear pigeon in felt wad 6's, bulk purchased by the above club ,are totally adaquate in the field for pigeon and pheasant. The gun or the cartridge are seldom the reason for a missed bird. Blackpowder Further to the above, I have a friend who was picking up behind the Percy brothers at a Border shoot, very high birds I am told. This picker up was amazed at the height these bgrothers were killing pheasants at and had a crafty look at the cartridge pile when he had finished picking up. Bog standerd 2 1/2 was his comment. COACH
Makes very little difference, what makes the difference is the bloke behind the gun.
chris t
I believe (rightly or wrongly) that if your gun is for example chambered at 3" and you put in a 2 1/2" cartridge then you can lose some gas pressure due to that extra distance gap. Now whether this makes a lot of difference to the shot fired, I don't know, however my semi needs gas to cycle and therefore tends to be generally more reliable with 2 3/4" or 3" cartridges. Have to say though there is a lot of ifs and buts in all this, so it probably make little difference. Chris
Lord Geordie
I bought a load of 2.5" gamebore 32g carts for a Pheasant shoot a few years back and they pack as much punch as the 2 & 3/4 carts. I had no trouble with hitting the birds nor bringing them down I Also used these carts on bolting hares with no trouble at all. Chris Never heard of that wether it's a 2.5 or a 2.75 cart they use the same amount of powder my Escort AND Hugsan buth fired the 2.5's no problem. Normally it depends on the LOAD rather than the cart size! If you go for a 24g cart then yeah you will lose a little power but all the 12g carts would require the same amount of powder at 24g so ALL would be a little awkward to Cycle. I use Gamebore 32g of 6s in a 2.5" cart and there is NO pressure difference for the lack of extra .25"
