Cartridge choice for Sporting?

So I've had a couple of lessons on the skeet now and have started hitting a few more than before. So thinking about "training" for the Norf v Saff (as I don't want to get the wooden spoon) I'm progressing onto ESP.

I've read loads of conflicting opinions both on here, on other forums and in books about the best mix of shot sizes, from 7.5 in both to 9 in 1 and 6 in the other. Am I worrying too much or is it worth "starting out right" and carrying a variety of loads for different birds?

Finally will I notice any real difference in shooting budget carts like Eley Firsts v VIPs?

TIA

Pete

I don't use Eley First's, but I won a few last year and decided to try them out at the Horne CPC, and I've got to say I was very impressed with the quality of the kills through my 1/4 & 3/8 chokes, they are certainly a superb shell for the money, my advice would be to use No 8 shot in plaswad, they obviously throw a lovely pattern. :welcomeani:

Started out with 28/8 Eley firsts. They shot OK, got used to them and discovered I couldn't find them locally and can't be ***** to mail order for a basic cartridge. Since i've also sold the semi auto and gone o/u, I shoot ESP with 24/7.5 Intercomps, and they work well. I shoot skeet with 21/9 Comp-X, and they also work very well. Little recoil and the clays are powdering so I can't argue!!
