Mungler
As it says on the tin. Half way through virus scan machine just dies (using AVG free). Tried another scanner (Pandasoftware on line scanner) and that it as well. Obviously, action point 1 remains "lay off the adult action romance". The laptop has had a good innings and it maybe just *time* for the old girl. She's had a hard life.
MC
Sounds like it needs 32grams of 6's to the hard drive.
-oXo-
Bit harsh but a fresh install of windows would be the job Edited February 18, 2010 by -oXo-
Mungler
A fresh install? I'm going with the shotgun in that case
tinytim38
Mungler, down load spybot from a site called filehippo that should sort out your problem, if that does not work go with the 32 grms

Quiver
Hi Mungler If its rebooting or switching off by itself then you need to run a virus scan from dos you should get one of the net the likes of Kaspersky but you need to put it either on floppy which a laptop dont have so put it onto Disk and boot from the cd and let it run make sure you get the latest version if you dont you may find the scanner misses the infected file/files I know its a pain but worth doing or try NOD32 from windows desktop just down load something other than what u r useing as some scanners miss what others will detect OR try and find the name of the virus and go to the net and try and get advice on manual removal or a fresh install provided you have all the drivers handy.......... anyway good luck Freddie

steve_b_wales
Get the programme malaware (free) http://www.antimalware2010.org/ Its brilliant.
Mungler
Ok, it's had CCleaner, Adaware, Spybot and a AVG scan and there's nothing there. It appears to be a "heat" issue - it's getting hot and then just flicks off. I think the old girl is done for, but she has had a very hard working life. So then, next question is Which laptop, and no Billy, I won't be going Mac (I'm married to a woman you see and don't read the Guardian). al4x
get on the Dell website get the spec you want some geek builds it and it just turns up. Once they start playing up is the time to get shot before you loose a load of data. p.s have you tried placing it in the fridge while it runs, might just cure the issue and let it complete the virus scan
MC
Well I have an HP 6735s with 4Gb ram and 250Gb hard drive and I use it all day everyday with no problems. I got it "FREE" with T Mobiles Broadband which was **** and after a long running dispute of about 3 months they cancelled the contract and I got the laptop. I don't suppose there is much in it anyway as they all come from Wikki Wikki land.
Alpha Mule
Check the screen saver and power off options also ensure you are not going into hibernation. Does the power off happen after a specific amount of time or at a certain percentage of the scan? Which virus killer are you using?
