GW80
This question is for th NI members on this forum ref Hare Numbers. I would like to get some feed back from the NI guys on this forum ref Hare numbers. Round here they were very scarce and last year i personally only bolted 2 (which I did not shoot). But having a day off last week i decided to follow the North Down hunt and their pack of hounds and have to say i was amazed at the hares that were bolted anyone else seen an increase in their numbers? dazza
I counted fifteen in a field this morning when I was out with the dog. We keep an eye on them as some ******** was at them last year with an air rifle.
monkeyboots
i know of a few places where there is quite a few hares but a hare is a thing id never shoot, we went to strabane last year with the lurchers and did cover with hounds with a few lads from there and the ammount of hares flushed that day was well into 20 odd hares although they where left to run on as we where after foxes

al4x
just shows how different it is area to area, we were out on the second hare drive in a fortnight on a local estate and we've had over 300 on each days. Lots of land and they do it most years, if the habitat is right and you have the ability to keep the do as you likeys off then they seem to be flourishing. PhilR
A friend showed me a pic on his mobile phone yesterday of the hares he and his mates had shot over two days up in Norfolk, the total bag was 416 and they get an invitation to shoot up there every year. al4x
its staggering we had 116 from the first drive from about 400 acres, amazing to watch and some cracking sport. essential round us as they are causing some severe damage
scolopax
Are those NI hares brown hares like or Irish hares?

ollie
On one of the mountains I shoot I would see anything up to 30 hares in a summer day. I have counted upwards of 60 on a night lamping but they are good to see and I don't shoot them.
Ballymac
A neighbour hunts with hounds and is concerned about the lack of hares in the area. There are some 1 here and 1 there type of thing but not in any reasonable numbers. No one around here would consider shooting a hare, you would be talked about for months One of the guys I occassionally shoot with in a syndicate, happened to shoot a hare mistaking it for a rabbit. Not only did he get fined the slanging he got lasted several months. Was out after magpies and grey crows last week and spotted two in a one field, must be that time of year, whereas a few years ago (7-8 yrs) there would have been a couple of hares in a lot more fields. Anyone notice the lack of hares at Bel Int. Airport. There used to be lots around there and I don't mean in the early 60's either . Any time I was flying out from there you could see them lying in hte grass and the paths that they had made for themselves Edited February 23, 2010 by Ballymac

If he can't spot the difference then he shouldn't be out shooting until he can tell the difference in his quarry.
davie mac
Going of topic a bit,but they say coursing is good for hares http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8533035.stm
Ozzy Fudd
listening to the video i think its more to do with the fact that the coursers operate in areas where theres more hares about, and so the hares are looked after a bit more, well managed/farmed, etc might be a better word. interesting all the same, though not my cup of tea
monkeyboots
would rather see a good dog run a hare rather than hares being shot
