Colster
OK, so having sneaked a peak through a mate's S&B I've finally convinced myself that a decent bit of glass is necessary on my .22LR. I'm currently looking at the following and would appreciate a bit of advice as to which way to go. Budget is £150-£200 but would prefer to keep it nearer the £150 if I can (sure you'll all guess which one in the below list is nudging the budget already) DOCTER 6x42 ASPHERICAL No 4 RETICLE DOCTER ZF 8X56 M SCHMIDT & BENDER 6X42(G) RET A4 26mm TUBE ZEISS DIATAL-ZA 6X42 LEUPOLD VX I 4-12x40mm I know the instant response is probably get the S&B but it is the most expensive out of the list. It's fairly scruffy but I'd just put a scope sock on it but is it worth the extra over the others or have I picked a contender in that list that would save me a few pennies I use the LR primarily for lamping rabbits but hoping this scope will go on a .243/.223 one day. al4x
any of the top makes in that list at that budget are likely to be nearly scrap, its only going on a .22lr you really don't need anything special,
seeker
FWIW I have a 6x42 S&B ... if it is the 26mm tube and steel, 26mm is not 1" so if it comes with rings OK .. otherwise it a bit more work. Nice scope and well sturdy

If you mean the one that was on offer on Uttings for £199 with free bins, they've sold out Anyone tried a Nikon ProStaff? They any good? Beardo
not tried the Pro Staff, but the Monarchs are good for mid-priced scopes
chrisv
I know other people manage with 40mm Leupolds, but from my experience I would go for a 50mm. I use a VX-ll 3-9 x 50 on my 22LR, and it's not as good as the European makes, but it's not too far behind. I'm a big fan of variable mag, but it's amazing how well you can do on a 22LR with a S&B 6 x 42. Edited April 30, 2010 by chrisv

Glensman
The reticle on the s&B is a bit thick for a .22lr...

Dekers
I don't believe the way to buy a scope for a .22lr is with one eye on it going on a .243 later!! :yp: Neither do I believe it is necessary to spend a fortune on a scope for a .22lr... Period!! Ranges are not massive and the .22lr is a very forgiving calibre. What others consider or want is a different matter, plenty of very capable NEW scopes available to put on a .22lr under £200. Choices and preferences get personal though! mick miller
http://www.theriflescopestore.com/bsc16287.html Worked out good for me (although I went for the free bipod), still cost less than buying in the UK even with the customs charge. Arrived in 7 days in perfect condition.
