Axe
well i'm normally a huge fan of Jeremy Clarkson and Top Gear but this weeks programme did it no justice in my opinion. After spending my licence fee on some rather tired but nice looking examples of yesterdays super cars, they set about thier trip from Bristol. I watched in ore until Jeremy quite obviously wrecked the poor Maserati on purpose. Blowing the engine sky high and then driving it into a hedge. Not too mention 'Mr Hairy' reversing his Lamborgini into a new Renault, on purpose. Anybody else disgusted with this, or is it just me? Perhaps I should air my views to points of view.! :<
Dunkield
I thought it was quite funny Axe so it may just be you mate! I take your point we did discuss the cost of the program in the office yesterday, as they wrecked some cars a couple of weeks ago as well. And the hairy bloke hit a few walls in the downhill challenge as well. It has turned into "us 3 having a laugh and filming it" Next week they are racing a car against a plane, more money... But on the other hand a program just about cars, as it used to be, would be a bit dull, as it used to be.
SNAKEBITE
If they want to be a bit daft then let them, but you are right about spending "our" money doing it. Would they still do it if they bought them out of their own pocket? (Thinking about it, quite likely!)
BountyHunter
I agree whole-heartedly. if I understand it correctly, JC produces the show now but the networks still buy it ultimatley at our expense. BH
Dunkield
How far do you deciding how our money is spent? 2 words - Chris M0yles
Axe
Its not the money that bothers me the most its destruction of such a lovely and 'probably' rare car. Doing this simply because they can is certainly not an attitude I would condone in the field, so why any any different for these beautiful cars. If JC didnt like the car or even want to drive, it would have found a nice home in my garage!
Cranfield
I believe that most (if not all) of the vehicles and facilities, used on JC's show, are donated/sponsored by the Industry. In return they receive no small amount of publicity for their products. Try asking how much one showing of a 30 seconds advert for a car brand would cost on ITV and you will understand why they do it. I think the BBC, both radio and TV, waste our licence fee in many more far outrageous ways.

Perhaps I should air my views to points of view.! :< Thought he reversed it into a nissan primera I personally dont have a problem with it, it is a great show, the cars are old and italian and on their last legs anyway, so they hadnt got much going for them anyway. The way i see it, i enjoyed it, they are spending our money and that does slightly annoy me, i cant afford to buy and insure a £500 car, yet they trash £10,000 ones, but imagine the production costs of other programs compared to others on TV. Racing the car through the streets did seem slightly barbaric (spelling?), but if that helps renault sell their car (remembering that topgear is probably one of the biggest factors effecting sales of cars in this country) then i dont see whats wrong with the company providing it with the intention for it to be broken (which it probably was). in my mind its still a very good program, and im looking forward to the bugatti next week. ** i didnt think JC produced it, i thought it was his Uni or secondary school friend who he once shared a flat with (saw it in his pieces in the times driving suplament), who in a previous episode they mentioned was buying the new porsche. Teal
Much better than most of the other **** on BBC. Would imagine it's also a fairly cheap program to produce. I watch it every weekend and without it, the license fee (for me) would be harder to stomach. I'm not a great 'car' person, but they manage to open up cars to a huge number of people by producing, an informative (for non experts) entertaining show. Axe
It is just me then, oh well, I just cant help feeling that what they did to that gorgeous Maserati was absolute sacrilege. I enjoy the programme as a whole and will continue watching and laughing, at Mr Teeth and Mr Hairy battle it out with JC. Oh and while i'm at it, give that girl a peanut: Ellen MacArthur 1.46.7 What a lap, what a girl, is there nothing she cant do better?! Dunkield
Axe, I have done up few old motors in my time, beleive me apart from possibly the Ferrari those cars were all well and truely beyond economical repair. And yes, she is quite something, one of our lesser known hero's JC is a keen pheasant shot BTW, probably more for the social side than anything else though

bobt
IIRC when the engine stops on certain Massaratis and ****roens the steering and brakes cease to work as well. I would have gone for the hedge too.

SS Yes LB Aaahhh, the old dangle the carrot routine! Owen, yes its a good job I didnt see it. Bobt, yes I would have driven into something to stop the car, but, if I knew what could happen as JC did, and knew that the engine was about to give way, as JC did, I would have done the correct thing and pulled over before letting the engine go. Not too mention the dangerous side of this stunt to other road users. however, i'm sure they made certain that they could stop the car safely and in an area where it could be done, they're not that stupid, are they?
