Fatcatsplat
You may have a touch of apnoea - Have a chat with the quack and if it's bad enough, they can link you up with a CPAP machine - All very easy and solveable. Try to avoid sleeping on your back as that is the optimum snoring position
agusta
If you have a large neck this can also contribute to the snoring (excess pressure on the airways), best to have a word with your GP.
Guest gloker
Spot on advice there, There are no quick fixes with snoring over the counter. All the strips and mouthguards in the world wont help if it is sleep apnoea. There are other options to CPAP (continuous positive air pressure.) masks too. First port of call should be your GP. (Take the wife looking tired and grumpy!)

djrwood
Definately could be weight and if you like a few beers. My Dad used to snore chronic, and then he went and did a tour of afghan, stopped drinking and lost a few pounds and has come back and doesnt snore at all. AVB
I recon it's almost certainly weight related considering that it has only recenly happened and you admit you have put on weight. It has happened to a lot of people I know. Lose the weight and I bet you'll stop snoring.
KFC
My wife was complaining about me snoring. I saw one of these electronic gadgets that you put on your wrist . They sell for £9.99 so I thought it was worth a try. The idea is that if you snore for three times on the trot then it gives a mild electric shock to the wrist. This is just enough to disturb you and stop the snoring without actually waking you up. The power is adjustable. First night I used it it was great. I had a great nights sleep and realised that the snoring had been disturbing me too. I woke fresh as a daisy. Three or four nights later I woke with a start. I was twitching like I was wired to the mains and this thing was zapping my wrist like a cattle prod. Then I realised. My wife was snoring her head off and setting the thing off!!! I'm not overweight so that's not a problem but I did find that the throat sprays that you can get from the Chemist definitely helped. They mildly anaesthatise the throat. Along with nasal strips, I don't have any trouble now.
poontang
I used to suffer with sleep apnoea. Went to the doc's and was given a machine to take home which i had to wire myself up to when i went to sleep. Long story short, i had an operation where my uvula was lasered out and my soft pallette was lasered and tightened. I can honestly say i've never felt so much pain when the anaesthetic wore off. I couldn't eat for two weeks, only liquids. The back of my throat was white where the laser had burnt the tissue. Nasty. I'm not sure the pack of Tunes my brother brought me were much use either  Had the op about 8 years ago and i still snore like a Rhino. Zapp
One of colleagues had an uvulectomy a while ago and he said pretty much the same as Poontang - that it was unspeakably painful. It is supposed to be one of the most painful operations there is. My snoring would put the engine in a Russian tank to shame (Mrs B swears blind that the windows shake sometimes), but there is no way on earth I would have it done. I have told her she can have her eardrums lasered if it gets too much  ZB
STOCKY A391
snore badly myself, definetly weight related ,( 5' 8 " tall, 16 1/2 stone, 19" neck , 52" chest) . Doc suggested quitting smoking too , and not eating / drinking to late in the day , (after 8 pm ) . The wife was also gonna sow a tennis ball onto the back of the t shirt i sleep in to stop me sleeping on my back ! Best of luck with it , i know from personal experience how bad it can disrupt you life .

Go to a sleep clinic and get tested for sleep apnea, or worse stil obstructive sleep apnea. I use a cpap machine at night, it totally stops the snoring, and your quality of life will improve over night. I bet your neck size is 16/17". if you want to talk to me about it drop me a pm, the machine is not an attractive piece of bedroom attire but if it keeps you good health it is a minor sacrifice Terry "bakerboy"
Vipa
I know I snore and I know it's mostly because I'm a fat g.i.t. but I do think there may be more going on than just snoring as I always wake up more tired than I did when I went to bed and then just want to curl up in a ball and sleep all day!!!!!!! Almost certainly sleep apnoea. Book yourself into the doc's and get the tests done. When i was wired up it showed that i stopped breathing for anything up to a minute on a regular basis due to my uvula inflaming and my soft pallette collapsing and shutting off my windpipe. As i said earlier i had my uvula and throat lasered which helped a bit but not totally as i still snore like a hog, but am not as tired as i used to be. I'm built like a Greek God, without an ounce of fat (good looking too) but if you're a tub of lard he might just put you on a diet

ME
I snore like a train since piling on the pounds. I sometimes wake up with a sore throat from snoring so much. It is much worse if I drink copious amounts of alcohol, so at the weekends or if I know that I am gonna have a beer (or ten) I offer to sleep on the beer (sofa) bed. djgeoff
yep i agree with all these post so far , i have just been diagnosed with sleep apnea about 4months ago the first thing doc said was wieght, smoking, drinking etc but because my other half said i stop breathing in my sleep for a very long time,( she could not sleep incase i did not start again). also i found i was falling asleep all the time, even when i was stationary at traffic lights,it was bad! i had hell of a job fighting it. i even fell asleep 5mins into a works meeting, and the big boss had to nudge me one of my mates said it was funny, ive never seen anyone sleep/snoring with one eye open and one closed. anyway doc sent me for tests where they fitted a device that monitored my sleeping and breathing, it was worn on the wrist and if i can recall a tube thingy at your nostrils. after this another visit to consultant, who would confirm my sleep apnea was severe and said i would have to inform motor insurance, DVLA and my employer. dont worry though, i thought the worst , no driving etc no job. but the way the consultant said do it was: while he was ordering a machine for me which would take some time. if i was to inform the DVLA, by the time you got the forms ( you can download these forms of thier site, but that would be to quick, do it via postal service)from them and sent them back and they contacted me you would have your machine and i could verify that your ok. re insurance they were no bother just made a note of it, said yeh thats ok we have loads of customers with this conditon. while i waited for my machine , my company were good too, as long as i was aware of my condition and if i felt it was getting to bad for driving then they would find me other work. the machine takes a bit of getting used to, which way to lie with this dam tube to mask getting in the way, some times in your sleep you might move the face mask seal and it blows air in you eye. the only thing that i am still having probs with it makes the mouth and throat very dry and you wake with a real bad throat. but at the end of the day it makes one hell of a differance, its that or no driving licence, no job etc really i should try and loose weight but i think that may be easier said than done. all the stuff i like is bad for you. and i cant stand rabbit food ( salads) hope this helps but dont worry machine is A1 if you require consultants name i could find it for you, hes a specialist in this field and hes from wales and travels to hostpitals as required regards geoff
