So a .22 rimfire with subsonic ammunition and a moderator, is about as quiet as it gets ?

Yep, shot the whole family of 5 fox tonight in a back garden and the neighbours didn't even know I was there! (neither did the fox until it was too late!!)

Quietest would be a silenced .22RF rifle with subsonic ammo. However, when aiming at a 100 yard target you can see the bullet head set off and land. Despite what you read on here, rubbish past 100 yards and they ricochet off hard ground all the time i.e. all the time after hot weather like now.

.17 HMR is as loud as a silenced .22RF rifle that is using full monty ammo.

a lot also depends on the landscape round you and background noise, we've used one near the M1 with that as background noise and horses in the next field didn't bat an eyelid. On my usual ground between woods it can sound fairly loud but its only of relevance with neighbours as rabbits don't know where the noise comes from so tend to just sit up nicely. As Mungler says its got more plus points than negatives unless you're tight when it comes to buying ammo but as you're from south of watford gap that should be fine :good:

I fear your account has been hijacked Cranfield... :good::)

...Exactly how many of these threads have you closed?

In answer to your question, as everyone seems to have just said that a .22LR is the quietest, which wasn't what you were asking. (Seeing as it was all one sentence, therefore meaning you were asking what the quietest .17HMR ammo is)

With the mod off, the .17HMR has got quite a *boom* to it which is suppressed very well with a mod. The *crack* will be consistent across the ammo range, as they're all 17 grain bullets.

I've also heard that all the HMR ammo is made at the same factory, but the manufacturers send their stamped brass for their brand.

They are not all made at the same factory and I'm looking at a box of 20 gainers right now.

I wondered if there were 20 grain ones...

How did you know they're not made in the same factory?

Hornady are maufactured at grande island nebraska and the 20 grainers i have made by CCI have a facility at lewiston idaho

and there small arms manufacturing is at the government owned lake city ammunition plant in missouri. :good:

if they were all made at the same place to the same tolerances they would all shoot the same in my gun and they dont?

Cranfield

The quitest way is a sub 12 ft/lb air rifle.

A.22lr with a decent mod( not parker hale) and subsonicsis quite and very effective.

i would say imagine a unmoderated .22lr any you would be looking at a moderated .17HMR

As for ammo, its what your rifle likes best, there is little noise difference, but there is a large amount of ballistic difference between the range.

Best advice is get a CZ452 with a sak mod, in the HMR and have a play!

None that I can recall.

I had a .22 Hornet about 30 odd years ago and thats about the level of my interest in FAC, so I don't normally venture deeply into FAC threads, unless a problem is reported.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated and my question has been answered.

I would compare the HMR to using a .22 with the stinger or HV bullets, exactly the same crack, nearly the same power, but not as flat shooting or accurate at the distance the HMR will spit a bullet out at 150-200 yards. I wanted both the .22 and the HMR but was only allowed 1, so went for the HMR, but ive just had a woman complain about the crack (horses) so atleast it gives me, and the police the reason now to get both, they all have their uses but I really do love the HMR, such a well performing rifle, everyone I know who uses mine loves it more than their .22 as it is more consistent. I use remmington ammo but have recently used Hornady as it is £10 a box and as accurate as the Remmy ammo.
