SuffolkShot
Hi all, I've just got myself a BRNO .22 Hornet. I'm mainly going to hunt foxes (lamping & high seat). I'm looking to spend up to around £100ish for a scope. I'm looking at the following and I'd really appreciate any views/advice/alternatives: Simmons Blazer 3-9x50mm for £42 Simmons Master Series ProSport 3-9x50 for £90 Simmons Master Series ProSport 4-12x50 AO £104 Nikko GameKing 4-16x50 £60 Big thank you in advance for your thoughts. SSS
To be honest, I would spend a bit more money on optics, I was always told to buy the BEST that you can afford, and if you can put more money towards better glass, you won't regret it Out of the above, the Nikko would get my vote, for a very simple reason, I have never looked through a simmons
al4x
S&B 8X56 is what you want, if you're planning on shooting foxes they usually appear at last light which is when you need a decent scope.
Mungler
S&B 8X56 is what you want, if you're planning on shooting foxes they usually appear at last light which is when you need a decent scope. Errr what he said. You will be wasting your money on anything else (which you will then regret buying and have to turn on, and then buy an S&B 8x56)
SuffolkShot
Hi all, thanks very much for your quick feedback, much appreciated. The S&B does indeed look like the ideal choice but unfortunately its miles out of my price range at £500+. There are a couple on ebay at £250 but even that is a bit too much. Probably a stupid question but will the extra £150 make a significant difference to my results? If so, I'll have to reconsider the budget! al4x
yep it will, been there and got the t-shirt and you will find sitting in your high seat with a cheap scope that you can see foxes in your binocs but not through the scope. Second hand is the way forward but you have to be fast on here or Mungler buys them all You can justify it to yourself that you either buy a decent one now or later once you've already bought another cheaper one. Lamping you don't see as much difference but when sitting out for fozes it makes all the difference
Raja Clavata
Another vote for an S&B 8x56, you won't regret it!
Devon Fox
I have a S&B 8x56 on my 243 - Love it I was always told to budget more for the glass than the gun - gun is useless without a quality scope! maddog546
I have a S&b 8x56 on my 223 but think the 8x56 Kahles on my .22 rf has the edge on it all round ,as the clarity is awesome. I have to admit I had a Nikko stirling 8x56 on my rimmy for best part of 20 years and thought it to be the danglies, but on changing I found the foxes chest blaze and body to be visible at well over 120 yards where as the Nikko gave you a blazing pair of eyes. You owe it to your quarry to place the bullet where it has best effect and to that end spend every penny you can on glass as without it your blind. SuffolkShot
Hi all again, Really appreciate all of your feedback. I've been reading up on S&B and they really do seem superb. Can't see a bad word about them anywhere. Only big snag for me is the price. I'd no doubt end up getting one in a few years after I've pulled my hair out with a cheaper alternative in the meantime, but the S&B price tag is just a little out of my reach at the mo (just got married!). I'm off to see what I can stick on ebay to get the funds up...! Thanks again
Colster
Have a look for other good European glass too, much as I hold S&B in very high esteem, other scopes are available. Kahles, Lisenfeld, Swaro, Zeiss, Docter, Leupold etc Couple of links which might help: http://www.rmacleod.co.uk/CUSTOMER%20S_H%20STOCK%20LIST.pdf http://www.emmacustomrifles.co.uk/WelcomeFrameset.htm

Nice scope, on a par with my 6x42 S&B, but a bit bigger and heavier. The 7x50 might suit your needs and it can be had for between £360 & £400 - quite a bit less than the S&B. Tim McAvoy sells them..... http://www.guns.gb.com/meopta-artemis-rifl...es-14780-0.html ...and Sportman's Gun Centre... http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/catego...ptics/Meopta_2/ Here's the listing on the Meopta web site http://www.meopta.com/index.php?id=226 Cheers, Steve
Frenchieboy
I have a Nikko Gameking 4-16X60 on my Bruno Fox .222 and think that it is a great scope for the money (J.S.Ramsbottoms do them at a good price with excellent service). The optics are clear enough end it works well on the lamp with ample magnification. As an example, I took out a large dog fox last Thursday Night with mine at well over 150 yards while lamping with a friend - I was in the long grass and all we could see was the head and eyes (Which gave us both positive identification) and would not come any closer to the call due to the conditions being all wrong (Full moon and practically no wind etc) and even if it had it would not have offered a safe backstop, so I aimed just a few inches the chin and the shot entered through the lower throat and exited through the back between the shoulder blades, the result was one extremely dead fox. If you can stretch to the price of a more expensive scope like a S&B or Kahles then great but if like me you are "on a bit of a tight budget" then you will not go far wrong with a Nikko Gameking! Chose wisely and only have to chose once!
welshwarrior
I have an MTC Mamba on my 22 but have used it on a 223 and it was still brilliant aslo know people who have great results with them on HMRs. I think they are great the fancy rectile is good on the 22 but the basic (germany no4 I think) is better on the centre fires. I'll buy one for my stalking riflewhen I get it. wildfowler.250
You could get a meopta 7X50 for £150 quid off the bay
foxbuster
You could get a meopta 7X50 for £150 quid off the bay Got a gameking on my .222 also (same position as you-couldnt stretch to the s+b's and leupolds etc). Honestly, they are fine for lamping, though you wont use the higher magnification in the night (mine set to x8). For the price you cant go wrong. Hope this helps.
