ADT Alarms

We had a visit today from an ADT engineer, who advised us that the system that we have installed at work would be obsolete in around a months time, and that the system would need changing. He advised that ADT out of their kindness have allowed a voucher of £1200 towards the replacement cost. The engineer advised that of all the jobs he has quoted so far, only one has not been covered by the voucher.-------------- Well he's just got his second that isn't and by some margin, he's gone away to se what he can do.

Our system involves PIR detectors and an audio listening system that is monitored to confirm any break in before the monitoring station call the Police.

My question PWers, is really for anyone who works in the alarm business.

Am I being fed a load of ********?

Are ADT just short of work?

What other reputable alarm companies are left after ADT gobbled up a load of the smaller companies?

"obsolete in around a months time", what a load of cobblers.

Sorry cann't help with other suplliers, my house alarm is done by a local firm who fall over backwards to keep me happy, as I obviously am paying them too much each year.

Sounds like waffle to me ADT keep telling me I have to have the system at work serviced which basicly involves wiping the camers lens from what i can gather.

interesting thing is they also said it was illegal to make any sound recordings.

I would call a local reputable alarm company and get their quote for providing a like for like service.

ADT do not have the monopoly of monitored systems as you describe.

It does sound as though they are just drumming up some extra business.

What is becoming "obsolete", the PIR detectors ? the audio listening system ? the monitoring company ? none of that is likely and you are being fed a cartload of youknowwhat.

Don't forget, you probably own all the hardware in your system, so moving to another maintenance provider and monitoring company will be easy (and cheap).

By "obsolete" im guessing the guy means that they will no longer be stocking spares for that system-unless low life scum are about to suddenly become more devious in a months time. Not much to go wrong on alarms and you will most likely get spares from ebay for years-our school alarm is 4 years out of date but i can get most bits on the bay-and at a fraction of the original price. As long as your insurance company are haopy with your system then you will be fine.

Just like any big company, they send their front line bods on a course to encourage business opportunites and development - ie drumming up business that may lead to a bonus - it's almost par for the course nowadays - when the BG engineer comes once a year to service our bioler, the first thing I say to him(and her once) is that I don't want any sales pitch - it usually cuts the visit from 20 mins to about 10. :good:

If it works then super - like someone said, canvass e-bay and local smaller firms for maintenance.

Work in construction (services) and ADT are about the worst and go off even further after they have your money. Mind you there sales section is good :good::yes:

It took 5 years to get the sign off documentation on the last project we used them on - an that was merseyside office.

Thanks gents, sorry I've not been back sooner, but I've my head stuck into spread sheets all evening with alternative costing variations for the new shoot.

Looks like I'm on a mission tomorrow.

I'll report back, watch this space.
