Diceman
Please. My kids (7 & 10 years) could have designed a nicer looking bodykit on an Etch-a sketch.... Did Tickford do cars for the partially-sighted ? Oh ME, don't. You're piddling on my memories. It was stunning in it's day. Anyway, your kids would run out of room on the etch-a-sketch before they got to finish that humongous rear spoiler....
Mungler
Who did that Capri with the massive whale tail rear spoiler - the one that made the rear spoiler on the Mk 1 Cossie look small.

Chris Bb
The old TVR V6 was the Essex block IIRC, about 112 BHP ? Pretty bomb proof though, just rattly tappets after you had thrashed them. I seem to recall that the Essex engine in standard form chucked out about 148HP, that was what I had in my Scimitar. Properly bored out and tuned it could deliver 250HP and was still unstressed. The Kent 2.8 which replaced it was built to lower margins and could not take such modifications. Always dreamed of a TVR. My pal had one with the Essesx engine and spliced in a Jaguar V8, you could hear him three blocks away. He had to sell it, it became too expensive in speeding tickets! groach1234
My dad has had two over the years first was a chimaera and that was a nice car to passenger and even my mum liked to drive it and it looked nice in a dark navy. Then there was the tuscan the battery was flat almost every time he drove it and it was ferocious to drive and passenger in but so so cool to be driven around in when i was 13 and went like **** off a stick. Out of the two i would go chimaera it'll be cheaper, more reliable and far more pleasant a drive. George

canthitathing
Had a TVR Griffith 500 a few years ago. Any amount of moisture on the road and the thing did it's best to kill you. Bloody great fun though and the noise was incredible. Might have to look on Autotrader now Having said that I don't think my non-sports ***** will fit the sports seats any more
PhilR
Capri's? My two next door neighbours had a 2.8i Brooklands and an older 3 litre and neither could live with my Alfa GTV6 2.5litre and it sounded beautiful not like those two old tractors

The Kent block was 4 inline (Escort etc).
fortune82
My uncle used to have a Tuscan Speed Six. He let me have a drive of it on a back road when I was about 20! Went like nothing Ive ever driven before or since. He never used first gear because it was so powerful. 2nd went from 0mph to about 80 mph effortlessly! Needed a new set of back tyres every 5000 miles though and on a trip from London to Dumfries it needed filling up 3 times!!! It was also stupidly unreliable but was so cool! Blunderbuss
I bought a 4.5 litre V8 Chimaera brand new in 1999. I got it tax free as I was posted to Cyprus, I sold it after a couple of years for more than I paid for it, which was nice I visited the factory in Blackpool a couple of times during the build and got to meet all the lads and lasses who used to build them. I even left a disposable camera in the chassis and they took pictures during the build which made a nice scrapbook. The factory was great, a mix of high tech CNC machines and Wallace and Gromit British engineering. Everyone there was proud of what they made, and proud that they were one of the few British car manufacturers left. I even bumped into Peter Wheeler the company owner and MD and had a chat on one trip to Blackpool, that doesn't happen if you buy a Toyota! The car was simply awesome to drive, look at and listen to. I didn't have a single niggle or issue with reliability in the time I owned it. The V8 burble was simply the best noise I have heard in my time on this planet I have patriculary fond memories of a summer trip to the Yorkshire Dales with the missus, with the top down (car not Mrs) and the V8 rumble booming off the dry stone walls down country lanes made my hair stand on end. I joined the owners club and discovered that many, if not most people had trouble free ownership. I'm not saying they're always going to be as reliable as a Japanese saloon, but they're not as bad as some doomsayers would have you believe. Go for it, you only live once! Edited August 5, 2010 by Blunderbuss
Dunkield
My mate had a Chimaera, by the end of time owning it he became quite good at diagnosing problems and fixing them - having said that he regrets the day he sold it, and wants another one... Along with just about every classic I have thought about owning one, if I were looking for one I would choose very very carefully. I am pretty good with cars so would be happy to sort most problems out myself, I am not sure I would consider one if I wasn't technical or didn't know someone who was. MM TR6's are nice but no more reliable then TVR's - prabably less in a lot of cases - the fuel injection can be nightmare.
AVB
Don't seem to remember them putting that much out (138 rang a bell also) but could be wrong, didn't Reliant mod them. The 2.8 was, I think you will find, the Cologne block. The Kent block was 4 inline (Escort etc). I had a couple of Capri 2.8i specials (D and E reg). The quoted BHP was 160. 0-60 7.9 seconds top speed 130. Limited slip diff meant some hairy handling. First one was stolen and cut into bits. The second is still going according to the database that tells you whether the car is insured or not.
Dr W
On the trip to Le Mans every year we always see a procession of TVR's by the roadside, a few never even make it to the tunnel.

Mungler
Apparently, those in the know would only ever consider the 5L Griffith - that's the only one that actually holds its value second hand.
