Dekers
Hi Guys Got some land in the midlands, only the second time I have been up there yesterday, all the usual issues of rabbit, fox and pigeon, big Badger set as well, a few Fallow, Ducks and Pheasant and two old Trout lakes. The trout lakes have not been used for some time and we were told they were empty, it didn't take a genius yesterday to see that they were not, it's fishing rods as well next trip.... Pictures of both lakes, (you can just see some water bottom right), one lake, and a picture on one of the hills, master of pretty much everything you can see and a lot more to the right and some behind as well, last picture was taken almost in the dark hence poor quality. No, it's not me, I took the pics. ATB!! PS Anyone got any trout fishing gear to spare, or do you think I can get away with my Carp rods and Baitrunners! stefnc
you can use your course fishing gear, although carp gear may be a bit heavy! this time of year the trout are taking fry, so try live baiting with a little minnow, failing that bang a ledgered lobworm out!!! good luck! Evil Elvis
Maggots and big earthworms all day long for trout!!!
hushpower
a small silver toby will do the trick cover all the waters pretty quickly and depths. After the couple of frosts we have had they will be in fattening up mode for over wintering so smash bang wallop
Fishermanpaddy
Stick a big bubble on with about 4 or 5 wetflies tied up the cast, you should be able to cover the whole lake and be able to cover any trout you see as the weight of the bubble will allow for a long cast. Dunkield
Don't be a heathen, get a fly fishing rod and reel and do it properly.
Fishermanpaddy
Don't be a heathen, get a fly fishing rod and reel and do it properly. LOL I would do myself but he sounds like he has carp gear and no fly rod so I just thought of the next best thing.
Dunkield
I agree, and it was a better idea than maggots and worms
Frenchieboy
Don't be a heathen, get a fly fishing rod and reel and do it properly. Here, here! I'll second that! Theat Game Fish with the same respect that you should (Hopefully) be giving to the live quarry that you shoot
Aled
Well i'd prefer fly, but if must use bait the advice given is fine, however make sure that you have an EA licence for trout as well! Tight Lines Aled
al4x
should have used what you had to hand at the time 12 would work if you get them in the shallows
Dekers
Cheers for all this, yep, I have no fly fishing gear at all...but the Carp Rods and Baitrunners was meant as a tongue in cheek comment, I do have some light course rods and reels. I did have a little trout experience many years back on a beautiful private water in Andover, a handful of casters from the owner turned the water into a seething mass of life, he also used tiny breadballs, at the time I didn't think that was the idea but it certainly worked. These lakes were man made as you can probably see, very shallow at the edges, the site is still very new to me, many questions to ask the owners yet, but I understand they were built as rearing lakes and the Heron did cause more than a few problems. So...this may sound daft coming from a reasonably competent and experienced course fisherman but...... Is their a trout season, please remember this is 100% man made and totally private? Do I need any special license? Anything else? Cheers
Dekers
should have used what you had to hand at the time 12 would work if you get them in the shallows Ha Ha!!! It went through our minds..we were looking at the ducks too, but we only had lead shot!
Dunkield
Is their a trout season, please remember this is 100% man made and totally private? Do I need any special license? Anything else? Assuming they are rainbows there is no season. If they are browns it's a good question they are a little different, I have always returned any browns caught between October and March - but I guess you can do what you like(?) You only need a normal EA Licence.
Mr_Logic
Tell you what, when I'm seeing my folks I'll bring my fly rod up and show you how to fly fish
Aled
Local seasons vary, here in Wales the brown trout season closes on the 30th of Sept, i'm sorry i don't know what it is in the Midlands, but i don't think it would be much different. Rainbows as mentioned no close season. So find out what's in there and if they are bows go get em! Tight Lines Aled ps Like many a convereted fly fisher i cut my teeth on bait fishing for trout, after catching a few on bait you may find the urge to start fly fishing, and there a serious addiction can begin. There is no known cure! You have been warned. LOL Edited September 28, 2010 by Aled
