kyska
Any one had any experience with the remington 597 semi auto? Mixed reviews, as always with semi autos. I've been offered one, with a good scope, PH mod, bag, two mags and 300 subs for £250. Any advice?
steve_b_wales
I bought a new one, and was very disappointed with it. Remington rifles are normally good quality and well made, but this model had a very plastic feel about it. I sold it soon after, and bought a Ruger 10/22. tweedledee
i read a lot of poor reviews though i think poor mags were to blame.i think they are on the 3rd generation magazine.i would sday try before you buy to see how you get on with it. Newsportshooter
I used a 597 in NZ and apart from the picky'ness for ammo thought it was just the job for what I needed it for (rabbit control). I personally liked the grey plastic stock and though it shot pretty well. If I were you I'd try and knock the price down a little bit and you'll have yourself a bargain. WHen I had it I used winchester subs in mine and was getting inch groups at 50 yards, with very few loading issues, which was more than adequate for the bunny's. Certain ammo wont cycle properly and some, like CCIs for me grouped terribly. On a final note, I currently have a 10/22 with laminated wood stock .920 barrel model, and to be honest I would probably swap it for a 597 if a good one came up..... Blackbart
I have one with the new gen magazine and it has cured the constant jamming problems, alas it never gets used and will be up for grabs when i decide what calibre to replace it with(as getting less guns is a backwards step isnt it ? )
steve42
The plastic mags are terrible !!!
the running man
I had one, felt nice in the shoulder, crisp if not heavy duty trigger, accurate, jammed like hell, tried all ammo, sold it and wouldn't ever recommend one to anyone except a scrap dealer. Yes it appears so, from reading reviews. I need a .22, for a soul searching reason (read my topic about fear of riqochet and backstops from a moon ago). I've always liked something different so I've gone for a .22 browning t-bolt, first impressions are good, but I've only put 50 rounds through it and its brand new out of the box....we'll see how we get on. Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.
