bunny_blaster
Im using a CZ varmint with 20" barrel. The best i can do with blue tips is 3/4" at 100 yards. I use CCI 20gr hollow points and get 1/4" groups at 100 with these. Cheers Ben
Devon Fox
Mine are with bi pod resting on the bonnet of a truck & sticks sometimes
Dekers
hi are all these groups taken , standing kneeling or with a bipod ? Mine in the picture earlier was off the bipod prone, I was pretty chuffed with the result, I would be over the moon if I could do that free standing! scooby1
Hi Rifle CZ 17hmr Ammo Fed red tip 4inch group at 300 yards.
scooby1
one thing i would like to add. Shooting a 17 hmr at only 100 yards is far to easy i just about shoot my .22 rim fire at a 100 yars as that is easy to. You should be shooting the 17 at least 200 yards and then check your group the 17 can do it very easy.

Yes but shooting 4" groups at 300 Yards does not guarantee a clean kill on most Vermin! and a 4" group you'd easily miss a bunny?

I think with more practise i will be able to do a bunny clean at that range. The 17 does pack a punch so i good chest shot should do it. Its more about guaranteeing a clean kill, a rabbits heart is what? about 2" same for the kill zone on the head, if you cant guarantee your going to hit it every time you really should not be taking the shot! i dont doubt the punch on the HMR, i was punching it through 1" slate the other day.... barrelsniffer
Hi Rifle CZ 17hmr Ammo Fed red tip 4inch group at 300 yards. 4inch at 300 yds..bit far for a 17hmr ?? for that dist a larger cal would be better to ensure a clean kill. kent
the gun and mostly anything i put through it seem to shoot fine, thing is though that is when i get to fire sighters and its a good day for testing. The hardest thing with the HMR is calling wind, with a 10mph sidewind moving the little pill near 4" you are going to struggle to get within 1" of your intended impact first shot no sighter. Shooting little bug holes at 100 yds is only half the story, sure you can soon get into reading the wind with practice but a 2.5 mph gust is a hard one to call in the field oh your in a dream world if you think you can humanely call 300yds live quarry shots, doubt the 17 pill would expand even if you hit the chest which i doubt grouping at 4" add wind and ranging error and thats just prayer shooting- the result would be inevitable - a wounder! barrelsniffer
Its pretty irresponsible to even consider shooting at live quarry at that dist with this cal...yu want range get a larger cal simple.
Frenchieboy
I use a CZ 452 Varmint with the barrel cut down to 16 inch and fitted with a 4-16X50 SMK scope and a SAK mod. I have no problem shooting sub 1 inch groups at 100 yards on a reasonable day off the bipod using Hornady Red Tips 17gr ammo. Here is a target I shot at 100 yards with a reasonable right to left wind blowing, the red bull is exactly 20mm diameter! I personally would not think about taking a shot at any live quarry with a 17HMR at any range beyond 200 yards! Dekers
We seem to have wondered somewhat, nothing new in that, I think the original question related to 100 yards. Everyone has different abilities and experience. Personally I have plenty of other tools to use at some of the distances mentioned and would never consider taking a HMR if I knew my quarry would be consistently 200-300 yards away! njc110381
He hasn't mentioned his 704 mile hare yet He has been handing out quite a lot of info though. Personally I think he's just a newbie with a little bit too much to say. I think he's picking up a lot quite quickly and what he says is often relatively accurate. The trouble is he pushes his luck a bit much and also gets in home loading rows with shooters who have been doing it for 20 odd years. That isn't a good position to find yourself in because experience counts for a lot sometimes! He also doesn't know when to back down and shut up! To a point I think I was like it when I first did the forum thing. Not to that extent but I do remember getting a few stern tellings over it! gunner269
Have go say that I have zeroed mine at 125 yards, I only shoot one shot groups and they all fit into a Rabbits head! Most guns will out shoot whatever you can do. If your first shot does the job you don't need to group.
gunner269
Please don't take my previous post as arrogance, it's just that I don't take a shot unless I'm positive of a kill. I have a Ruger No 1 in .308, I can't get what would be called a good group with it, however when stalking, I've never failed to kill with one shot.
