Fisherman Mike
My colleague at work is in the process of renewing his Shotgun licence...Problem is although he sent off in good time his Constabulary are really dragging their heals and his certificate has expired..he asked me if I could hold 2 guns in my gun safe until his new certificate arrives....The police say it might not be for another 6 weeks.! Im ashamed to say I dont know what the protocol is involving this...is it a Transfer and should we complete certificates and send to the police.?in the normal way? Many thanks. HDAV
You would need to do a transfer and inform police, but the local FLO should be able to tell him he is fine to keep them on his expired cert if it is their backlog which has caused the delay. Best to speak to local FLO. You can hold his guns under the 72 hour rule for 72 hours but any longer and you would need to do the paperwork just as you would in a sale (RFD's can hold them on their register if necessary) but put lent on the forms. This increases paperwork for both FLO's so seems daft. He should be able to get a letter from His FLO allowing him to keep them in his cabinet until they pull their finger out and do his renewal (have a search its been covered here a few times recently) Edited January 14, 2011 by HDAV
WGD
You can hold for max 72 hours without them being on your cert, but as HDAV says, the FLO may take a view on your friend holding guns on an expired cert while a renewal is processed. Gordon R
I held Mark Sw's guns whilst he waited for his licence to be transferred from Manchester to Lancashire. I just e-mailed both sections and explained that I was holding them for him. Worked perfectly.

BlaserF3
A section 7 certificate should have been offered and some forces seem not very keen to give them out, but I would demand one just to keep legal and to not have to loan my guns to someone else. Should never have let the cert expire without demanding a Temporary cert . I had to do this once on renewal, I applied WELL in advance and they just dragged their heels, after several requests for a progress report and getting nowhere I asked for a Temp Cert 7 days before expiry. They were more than reluctant as it meant more work for them, not my problem. I may be getting mixed up but I believe I could not buy ammo on the Temp, but at least I had a piece of paper to prove the guns were legally held! Luckyshot
Taken from BASC What if I experience delay? If you have returned your application form in good time and are experiencing delays which may put you in unlawful possession of shotguns when your certificate expires, you should ask for a Temporary Permit under Section 7 of the Firearms Act 1968. This will allow you to keep and use your firearms and shotguns and also, by virtue of Section 5(2)(a) of the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988, to purchase shotgun cartridges So it looks like you are able to use and purchase amunition (SG Cartridges) under a section 7 permit. That's interesting, I had an idea I had a problem to buy ammo, mine was a Co Terminus renewal, perhaps it was rifle ammo, or perhaps I am just getting mixed up. al4x
FM as said if his license is about to expire sign them onto your ticket and you both inform plod of the transfer. Obviously it may be due to backlog or he may have submitted it late, so not necessarily plods fault. I do know plenty of people who have had their guns with expired tickets while processing has gone on and it has never been an issue but always with close corespondance with the firearms dept
BigG
I had this with Hampshire last year, they were 3 months behind. Just call them up. Apart from buying carts it was no issue at all. Rgds G
