Started off yesterday afternoon by baiting for the fox at the MILs.Tore up some breasted pheasants and put in slits made with the spade and then stamped in so they have a bit of work to get the rewards.Have been feeding it for the last 3 months so easy to tell when there are more moved in.The pic with the hole shows what the slit looks like after it has been dug out and usually there is paw prints to help identify the culprit. When i fed yesterday near all the bait was gone so i knew at least one fox was visiting regular so decided to try it at night with the new Pulsar and three quarter moon.

Next i took the twelve to the pond hoping it had thawed and try for a duck or two.Unfortunately it was still solid so i scattered the barley i had taken down and sat to see if any ducks were going to move.Just before dark a couple of pairs by passed the pond and followed the burn instead.I thought that would be the best bet but left it too late but did manage a drake mallard from behind who nearly caught me napping.Luckily he came down just in the edge of the water and Rab retrieved.

Next stop was home for the rifle and Mac and the Missus came to her mas too.Three quarter moon and clear skies and it was looking good for getting a shot at foxy. Was there for 6ish and at half seven the first one came to the top bait. Was setting up the sight with Mac watching the fox with the bins when he legged it.Not sure if he had got a whiff or maybe the smell of the fresh bait had put the frighteners on him.The back of midnight the clouds appeared and it was a nightmare trying to spot with the bins.Pursevered and at ten past two one appeared at the bottom bait which is 50-60 yards from the house window. The missus was in bed beside the window with Mac so every time i was away to take the shot she worked the Yukon MPR,but with not using the Pulsar before i was making a right royal ***** up as every time i tried to pick him out the IR flooded everything making it a nightmare to see him. This went on for about 2 hours with him digging a bit up,going away to eat it and then coming back for another before i sussed to scope him with just the Digisight and no IR.Once i was on her i switched the IR on and it was much easier, apart from pulling the trigger the first squeak and the safety still on.After i did fire i just saw him run and thought i had maybe missed, but the missus said she saw it come back very sickly looking straight after the shot on the Yukon.I watched it back and sure enough the shot had been spot on and he was about 50 yards away from the shot.A wee vixen and there is at least another one as the top bait had been scoffed after we got the head down at 5ish.

Then home for the twelve again and a wee walk round for a pheasant or two.Rain and very windy made for some very sporting birds and an outstanding retrieve from Rab.I hit this cock hard and he went vertical for about 80 yards and then just glided into the woods about 300 yards away.I said to Mac that we wouldnt get that one but put Rab in as the wind was perfect for him.Shocked when he came back with it and well chuffed. It had a pellet in the head that often makes them do the vertical rise.Mac took some pics and managed to snap a very fortunate two with one shot in the last pics.Three came out and 2 must have lapped when i pulled and you can just see the feathers in the air and one bird nearly down and one down. Was too shocked to take the other one you see flying away.Ended up with 7 pheasants and 2 cushies.Superb weekend and sure beats working.
