have we got any mechanics on this forum could do with a bit of advice got a peugeot 306 turbo diesal but is very lumpey in the mornings and chucks out load of smoke but when warm runs fine its just when its cold any ideas :<

Does it start OK BD?

If it doesn't you will get loads of unburnt deisel pumped though and that will make do what you say. If it doesn't start OK, sounds like you need new glow plugs, they are about 70 quid from Peugeot and don't last for ever.

I have had 3 306 D turbo's and they are very reliable and good on fuel and they go well for diesels too :sly:

Its your glow plugs 1 or more could be worn, lots of smoke even worse when its cold? you should be able to do them yourself, you can check them easily by taking them out one at a time and passing 12volt current through them if they warm up they are ok, if one or more doesnt warm up replace them all.

Cheers

Noooooooooo dont do anything like that!!

Its winter, diesel cars hate it. Diesel fule gets quite thick in the winter, and is very difficult to get it ignited.

Make sure your batter is ok, (test with a voltmeter), but if its turning over ok, it shouldnt be a problem.

If you can, keep the car is some place warm. It wont start bellow -1.. or if it does, it will take a lot of work, especially if its old.

ANother thing you can try is add some fuel additives to help the engine start. I think Redex do some things like this, have a look in your local petrol station. Dumping a bit of this in with the fuel will help getting started on cold days.

In Russia you sometimes see people starting a little fire under their diesel pickups and trucks, to warm the engine enough to get it started. Theres no hope starting it in -40 :sly:

Should be fine.. Diesels rarley break the piston rings. Very good on maintainance.. providing you replace the oil every now and then, they will keep running up to the 200,000 mile mark if well cared for

Bobby Dazzler,

My diesel is the same. You start it from cold and have to give a bit of accelerater to chuck out all of the grey smoke and then it is fine.

I think Hunter has it correct in so much as the glow plugs warm the initial diesel to start the engine and then, thicker colder diesel comes along.

If it runs O.K other than the initial grey smoke, leave it alone.

Rob.

P.S My diesel has 148,000 on the clock and runs smooth as a nut once warmed up.
