vole
I have always used these for certain patterns such as Klinkhamers and Parachute dries . Cheap and they do the trick . http://www.fastmailtackle.co.uk/index.php?cPath=125 Ps I have also had good ones off Dragonflies , via Ebay . If you are selective then you can get some good useable effective flies from the foreign tied cheapies . For something that is going to get shredded or stuck in a bush I would not spend too much. They for river or stillwater ? Edited June 26, 2011 by vole
Dunkield
Fulling Mill are decent quality, as are Orvis but I am sure there are other good ones too.

paul87
What sort of trout fishing are you looking to do? Sea trout, River / Estuary? Brown trout? Rainbow trout on lake? John Norris do decent wee boxes I'd have this for sea trout and brown trout http://www.johnnorris.co.uk/shop/ty_699-fly-boxes/7190-wheatley-comp-lite-pocket-fly-box.html or this as a starter allrounder http://www.johnnorris.co.uk/shop/ty_699-fly-boxes/5796-fox-box--trout-fly-selection-3613.html
Gillaroo
Donegal or Fulling Mill are good if you don't want to start tying your own. Ian and Craig Barr also have decent patterns on their sites. Forget the "FAST-BULK-FLIES-DIRECT.com" etc etc as they're rubbish. Poorly dressed on cheap hooks. There's a reason why they're 5p a fly. Cheers Gillaroo
Fatcatsplat
Buy local to where you are fishing and they will tell you what's working on the river/lake at that time.

Cheers Gillaroo I have caught plenty on cheap foreign tied flies in certain conditions . Depends on the circumstances . You do not need to use specially tied masterpieces when all you need to do is vaguely imitate the hatch . If presented well they will not be turned down . The 'point' (gettit) is the ulta cheap ones are tied on hooks that will straighten with anything decent attached and the dressing will also come undone just when you don't want it to. At risk of "labouring a point " I have landed wild brownies to 6lb on mass produced patterns without any loss due to hook failure . Dont get me wrong ,I also use exquisitely made flies from a local tier at £1 a piece . However if I am casting at a rising fish under a bush on the far bank I am more likely to get it with a 40p pattern . I firmly believe that presentation is more important than having an exact replica especially in running water . I use 6lb tippets and have never had a hook straighten . hendersons
For years I would only buy fulling mill flies,as I thought they were the only ones strong enough.I generally fly fish for double figure trout on lechlade so strength was my biigest concern. A couple of years ago a friend introduced me to these guys http://www.dragonflies.co.uk/store/ and I now exclusively use them. I've never had one straighten out on me And they always seem Pretty well dressed Nick

Exactly my point Dunkeld. Believe me guys, either tie your own or buy the best quality you can. Otherwise, be prepared to lose that fish of a lifetime to a straight hook. If someone can prove me wrong by (for example) showing me a nicely tied size 14 skinny diawl on a decent hook for 20p or thereabouts I'll hold my hand up but it ain't gonna happen. Remember many flies are sold to catch fisherman and some of the patterns we use would remain in the shop tray for years as anglers wouldn't believe you'll catch on that. My other point is that by tying your own you can be creative on patterns and some of my best ones a 5 year old could tie. Imagine the pleasure you'd get having other anglers catching using Dazza's nymph. Cheers Gillaroo PS Even the most perfectly presented and dressed fly will on occasions be turned down. I'm a novice but have learnt my lesson here already. As previously said, Orvis are quality and they have a summer sale starting on Sat. 2nd to Sat. 30th of July. Hundreds of 1/2 price bargains whatever that means but if there's some flies amongst them it can't be bad.
