what to do with a damaged round

Recommended Posts

I was out the other day with the hmr and on the way back to the motor I drop the mag in to my pocket. When got back home, one of the rounds had worked it's way out of the mag and had got slightly squashed out of shape, meaning that it won't chamber.

What's the safest thing to do with it?

I think i'd want to be a bloody long way away from an hmr round used as a target!!

At the risk of being pilloried by the eco warriors i have been know to sling the odd knackered round in the river, that's RIVER, not stream. Its about 30 foot deep.

I guess the responsible thing to do would be to hand it in to plod and let them dispose of it, at least its no longer your headache, they always take any old WW2 rounds that i dig up so i guess they'd take a damaged round???

Is there a river at the back of that police station? :hmm:

many, many years ago when i was very young (yes they did have guns then...) i did something similar with a .22LR round, which went off and the casing buried itself about an inch in a cow's ****, so i've always been a bit careful about messing about with firearm rounds since.... :D

God you'd get on with me then...

Ever hit a .22LR round off a golf tee?

I doubt burying it or droping it in water would do anything towards making it inert untill the case totally corroded. I tried to kill some primers once by water, wd40, 3 in 1 oil the whole gambit- it didn't work!

Get a kinetic Hammer and pull it empty the charge out and set it alight then fire off the primer in a suitable firearm

I didn't think you could get one small enough to hold an HMR round.

Save the money and use pliers ;)

+1 :good:

Pull the head throw the powder to the wind, bin the rest.

Job jobbed.

It realy isn't such a big deal

Why go polluting rivers and farm lands?

I used to make 50ft flares with 7.62 tracer rounds(a lot of them). Never had an incident :hmm:

I must just be the lucky one who never got killed

If you buried it into a bank and shot it, you'd be fine.

I know it's not exactly the same, but haven't you ever shot a shotgun cartridge as a target?

I find it challenging enough to hit a rabbit, let alone rimfire round.

Thanks for all the replies. :good:

not sure I'd want to use a kinetic hammer on a rimfire round personally, some people worry too much stick it in a hole job done won't be seen again.

+1 :good:

Using a kinetic hammer on a rimfire cartridge is NOT a good idea

Taking the bullet off with pliers gets my vote, you should be able to do it by hand as long as the bullet hasn't be rammed back into the case

Assuming you are carefull and hold the case with long nose pliers etc. What are the danders of setting the round off by denting or bending the rim?

Highly unlikely, if you applied gentle pressure to the rim.

Although, you wouldn't do it that way. You hold the bullet with the pliers and with your hand/fingers force the case downwards as if you were trying to snap the bullet in half. The bullet will just roll around the neck and pop out.
