bakerboy
This afternoon I went to look at a new permission that had been offered to me, what a fantastic piece of ground. The scenery was stunning and the Farmer helpful, showing me the flightlines and best places to set up. Whilst walking around I saw 3 magnificent Stags with a few Does in tow, he asked whether or not I shoot deer and I replied honestly, "not yet" when you are ready let me know came the reply, they are a real pain. The 3000 acres comes with the rabbit as well, so I am a very happy boy tonight. Having shook hands on the arrangement, he said I understand you take new people out and help them get started with pigeon shooting, as I would like to see how it is done, so if you can show me and the son I will pay you for the trouble. My problem is do I charge him or not? By the way I was invited to this permission by being one of those annoying people that stand behind a shooter in clay stands offering advice. Is this a new way to get permissions? ( I was asked by his mate to give advice) Edited August 16, 2011 by bakerboy
gixer1
Don't charge in my opinion, sounds like you have a dream place there....and he could be a good friend and a handy person to know! Regards, Gixer

Blunderbuss
I agree Terry, I wouldn't charge. Some free tuition in exchange for such a great permission sounds like a fair deal to me. He sounds like a decent bloke.

HDAV
Nicely done terry, I wouldn't charge him but perhaps he would supply his own carts... and write a nice letter to the FEO for when you put in for a deer rifle.....

Cosd
Well done Terry, sounds a great piece of land. Your hard work and social networking is definitely paying dividends. My advice would be not to charge, but your the man at the moment so I trust you'll make the right decision. Congratulations on the new permission again! bakerboy
I would never have charged him, I just wanted to see what the reaction would be . I don't bite the hand that feeds me but what a decision to have to make. I may be old, but as far as I can remember I am not silly
Bluestem
Never charge the landowner or their family for guiding services. Good dogs and the willingness to sacrifice a few shots has gotten access to some pretty decent shooting. Congrats on the new access! al4x
nice one Terry, sounds like it was a more productive night than handing out cartridges Sounds like you have a prime opportunity to get the landowner and particularly his son into shooting. Contratry to many views farmers are usually nice guys its just a case of getting in the door. If you fancy a fallow in the garage let me know
Frenchieboy
Charging him or not is entirely up to you Terry so I will only say what I would do mate. If it were me being given such a nice productive chunk of permission I would never charge for help, advice and tuition on shooting and I would be happy to spend time giving both him and his son a few pointers and lessons by way of saying thank you. As has been said, many farmers are really good chaps, it's all down to how you talk to them and how you choose to respect their land and livelyhood! I know how hard it can be for some shooters to find new permissions but I do wonder (occasionally) if it might be partly down to how the shooter meets and speaks to the land owners when asking for permission to shoot. I hope you enjoy your new permission and find it productive for many years to come mate, that one certainly sounds like it deserves a nice bottle or two of really good quality single malt at Christmas time! apache
You long as you don't train him and his son in the noble art of pigeon shooting and suddenly he no longer needs your services!
groach1234
You long as you don't train him and his son in the noble art of pigeon shooting and suddenly he no longer needs your services! I dont think many farmers running 3000 acres can afford the time off work to effectively manage all the land and if he is offering stalking when the OP is ready he should be okay it suggests he doesn't have the inclination himself and as for the question of should you charge I thought you'd have had to have been mad to... george
Dunkield
I am surprised by the lack of offers from 'friends' offering to sort the deer out Terry, but I bet your in box is full of them Well done.
