is it correct that if i was to release a grey squirrel it is an offense?

it has to be dispatched, is this correct?

if this is correct, then why in todays sun newspaper ( assuming its a grey) did number 10 downing street not conform to this and dispatch the offender?

and what did the r.s.p.c.a do with the squirrel if it was a grey?

see attached scan of news report

your thoughts please have i got it wrong?

But I bet there is something humane in his office to the job!

Giving the topic of what a bunch of planks our MPs are a swerve: The plod that guard the PM are all armed. There wouldn't be any fuss if one of the lads eased the poor wee squizzer out surely.

No you haven't got it wrong if it was a Grey you got to kill it if you catch it....More likely that D.C. Doesn't have a water butt in the back garden of No.10

sorry bud the law just changed you can apply for a licence to release grey's.the rspca have a licence for all it's superintendents,so they can let them go ! wish i knew where they let them go,PULL

On the basis that DEFRA, a lot of Europe, Australia, and the US have been working together for several years to eradicate the Grey, and DEFRA has had an OPEN hit list on them for about 5 years, then any approval to release a Grey will be VERY rare.

Once bought into captivity for whatever reason, their fate is generally sealed, it is a life of captivity forever onwards, or a very short life.

They havent broke the law-the animal was never trapped.

If you were to trap a grey you are legally obliged to destroy it as they're not a native specie.

Trapping has nothing to do with it, if it has become captive for whatever reason then read on.........

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act the release of non indigenous species is prohibited without a licence from the Department of the Environment. This would include species such as Canada Goose, Grey Squirrels and American Mink.

The RSPCA are not above the law (even though they commonly like to think they are).

Where did you come by this information?

Ok this is 2009, and some years before, but on this basis I would have to suggest the RSPCA are breaking the law if your statement is correct!

was hoping i got it wrong but hear it is in black and white ,,sorry cant do it , it's in the Times on line ,CAPTURED SQUIRRELS LIVE TO NIBBLE AGAIN / FEB 16 2008 ,SORRY NOT VERY GOOD ON COMPUTERS

Scroll down this link to 2008 and look at the Grey Squirrel figures. These are Government/DEFRA/Natural England, Official Figures.

http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/Images/schedule9stats_tcm6-10261.pdf

On this basis we must be drawn to the conclusion that if your Times article from 2008 (which I haven't seen) says the RSPCA released 500 greys they have broken the law, only 6 licences were issued and only 273 Greys effected in 2008.

But the Times article may well be talking about RSPCA figures for 2007, as it was Feb 16 2008, in which case it is possible, the figures show 13 Licences and a total of 1693 Greys effected in 2007.
