the pelt man
After skining the Buck Munty i shot this morning for the PW butchering night i went out with SS on the Pigeon. I had gained a new permission and there were a good 200 birds hitting one of the fields and they were there again this morning when i past it on the way back from stalking . SS and i left for the field around 11am, when we arrived there wasn't a bird to be seen . So SS said he'd seen birds hitting some wheat stubble a couple of miles away on one of his permissions, so off we went. When we arrived there wern't any birds on that either but as we drove round the field we saw a lot of birds in the sky and lifting from the trees , so we set up under a oak out in the middle of the field. The wind was left to right, we had a L shape patern with 2 magnets either side of the short leg up wind. a few birds from the freezer in craddles and 2 floaters out about 50 yards. The birds came in steady all afternoon, with very testing shots from all angles in a strong wind. With us both using clickers i found myself 10 birds behind SS after a couple of hours so resorted to underhand tactics calling a bird for SS which he dropped i think on the second shot, but i knew it was a Feral and dosen't count on the clicker and it was my turn to shoot again. I still eneded a dozen birds behind at the end of the day, but we clicked 111 and picked 114 Both dogs worked realy well and Molly (SS's) bitch showed Bruno (my GLP) the ropes. She really showed her skill marking a hit bird loosing altitude and crashing in a wood some 250 yards away, SS sent her out with the comaned "GO BACK" and she was off through the hedge and a minute later retuning proud as punch bird in mouth  I have just had a thought, SS how many of your birds count as halfs ? the fact that a lot of them still had there shell on  Great Day SS Cheers PELTY Edited September 10, 2011 by the pelt man
