goldeneye243
Just wondering if anyone uses a sling on their shotgun? My semi-auto has mounting points for a sling and I was wondering today whilst decoying if it would be useful to put it on my shoulder when I go out to pick up birds or change the pattern etc... Cheers !

Redgum
I have never had one on a shotgun but it does sound like a good idea for a bit of hands free work and keeping the gun with you. Then again I do have a very good dog. I say, Old Chap! Steady on, not British, not British at all! Apart from which, what is it that you're shooting while changing the pattern to need the gun? Uhhhhh Pigeons perhaps   :look:
humperdingle
Yep, I use a sling on the Beretta semi-auto. Just stays on most of the time, but will sometimes remove it if clay shooting.
goldeneye243
what is it that you're shooting while changing the pattern to need the gun? I quite often seem to manage to be out of the hide when some pigeons come over so I have been tending to take the gun with me... I am quite new to this decying lark though

bullet boy
I've got a Logun Supa Sling on my Winchester SX3 and use it all the time.
Redgum
Thats the beauty of pigeon decoying, the birds will see the slightest movement in the hide and veer off at 100yds yet they can float down amongst the decoys when your there. Read something ( think it was from Chris Green ) bout digging out a shallow trench and shooting incoming pigeons lying on your back, interestin concept, pretty sure it was a technique used on stubble. I've heard of that being done whilst shooting geese. Can't imagine it would be very warm, though!

I am quite new to this decying lark though Rightly or wrongly, unlike our Continental colleagues, shotguns, slings and we British are not traditionally mentioned in the same sentence. Strolling about is one thing but crawling about the floor concentrating on what you're doing while having a loaded gun over your shoulder ready to slip to the ground and discharge itself is not conducive to safe conduct. You'll find that if you have to leave the hide for whatever reason, it is better to concentrate purely on that purpose and return to the hide as soon as possible. Just as with fishing where you'll catch more fish the longer the fly is on the water, you'll get more shots the longer you're in the hide. Simon123
I also use a sling on my semi auto. Becomes very handy when walking long distances when on driven shoots ;)
wyatt
Yes on my semi, I wouldn't on a SBS or O/U as I'd carry it broken. If I'm clay shooting then it comes off as it goes in the slip when not in use.
Rushjob
Another yes for the semi and no for the O/U cos it's broken over my shoulder.
Scully
Had one on my section 1 auto 'cos it was so bloody heavy to cart around.Haven't bothered putting one on its section 2 replacement.

'Fowling - well that's different, quite alright on the marsh.
njc110381
I always use one on my combi gun. Not sure whther to class that as a rifle or shotgun, but it's my walking about gun so kind of does both! I wouldn't use one in a hide - no point. I think that when changing decoys you want the gun in hand. Bending over with a loaded gun on your shoulder is risky. Holding it not so much as you're still in control of where it's pointing. Pretty much I think if static shooting it's pointless. If you're walking a long way it gives your arms a well needed rest. I'm not sure I like the look much for a formal shoot whether walking or not...
gixer1
Anyone who's tried carrying a couple of geese, a game bag, cartridge bag, small folding seat, shotgun and a dog lead will know the benefit of having a sling on your semi-auto... as for a sling on an over and under -
