Passed a rape field this morning at 10.30, noticed movement from a flapper, could see a hide under some trees, don't know how they were getting on, seen a few on rape but personally think there on the stubble its been drilled on. lesdogger
We had a look at our rape fields today, and they seemed to be hammering it. So we set up with just a few shells, and the old inevitable happens they all ****** off never to be seen again. We ended up with 3 crows and 1 jackdaw. Alanl50
I shot 18 on the rape this morning, 6.30 ish to 8.45am, its just one spot they seem to like, only a small flock, made myself a nice hedge hide ready for the good times I hope. I have just started to hang out the rope bangers for the farmer only 3 times a week at the moment, he just does not want the pigeons to get comfortable, 3 fields all a bit slow and patchy on the growing dept we need some rain. Nearly all I shot had a mixture of seed in there crops never got a chance to eat any rape. Alan Edited October 2, 2011 by Alanl50

TJ91
Most still under the oak and beech trees here Usually start of November before they start showing any interest in the rape. Nothing direct drilled unfortunatly.
pigeonblasterian
The hawthorn bushes are covered in berries round me.The pigeons usually see to those first before starting on the rape properly.
Gav912
They have been hammering some of our rape at work but the village PC has been taking care of that particular area for us (pays to keep him onside!!) Due to the warm weather lately though its been growing quicker than the blue rats can attack it, as soon as it turns colder though I'm sure they'll be on it with a vengeance, particularly as all 5 fields have trees/woods arount them this year for the little **** to shelter in

Catamong
we must be the only people in the uk praying for frost & snow.We must be nuts. You've obviously fallen for the old wives tale that says pigeon shooting improves when you get snow and frost. Birds feed harder in the Winter because they have only a few hours of daylight and they need to take on more fuel to stay warm, it has nothing to do with frost or snow cover. If you're out to decoy pigeons, snow is the last thing you want to see, in my area it makes the birds stay in the woods and feed on acorns and beech mast, if the snow cover is prolonged, they all clear off to other parts of the Country where there is no snow. TJ91
i thought they only travelled 20 miles or so as a maximum Some pigeons migrate hundreds of miles from some countries! They will go as far as they have to for food...instinct to survive and they can't survive without grub

caeser
Went out yesterday with a friend, and watched a couple of rape fields for an hour or so. There was a small flock building up, of maybe 40 or 50,but never actually saw them drop into the rape, but they were in a couple of trees overlooking it, so set up on one of the fields. Set up by 9am. we ended up with 16 birds between us by 4pm, (and 12 crows) so all in all a good day. Some birds just dived straight into the decoys, some just came close for a nosey. Rotary going, flapper going, 40 deeks spread over two separate areas about 100 yards apart. Although it was ,what I'd call a good day,for this time of year, we did watch them all day dropping into a large wood, which is full of oak trees and beech etc. So ,I think we're not quite there yet with the rape feeding.
