Buying a new Chain Saw but which one

Need to buy a new one as my old one died and I want it guaranteed for a while. Previous one was a Stihl 026c 18 inch bar. Piston scored and stuck.

I'm looking for one with enough engine capacity to run an 18 " bar minimum and I probably saw down and saw up maybe 6 no., 50/60ft tress a year, apart from working on the shoot - so I guess semi professional would be good

Would you recommend Stihl, if so, which model and, where in the north west do you reckon the best deal is - I'll be checking the web once I have a maker and model no.

Thanks all in anticipation of some wise advice.

Either Stihl or Husky

Give Brendan a ring at Deva Mowers 01244 674313

or

try Charlies at Queensferry, they had some Stihl at good prices last time I went in, but they are not on the website http://www.charliesdirect.co.uk/

Worth driving over if you get a good price, avoid Huskys with tool less chain tensioner (see my post from last week)

Husky all the way, had one for years an never let me down till old age had it.

Tried mending it but it was to hard getting the old spares for it. Otherwisr have a look at the chainsaw in the link

and others in the rancher range. Semi or pro an all will do the job. :good: :good: :good:

with a open budget I would be looking at a Husqy 372XP or a stihl MS441. both 70cc saws that will easily pull a 20" bar quickly or take a 25" bar.

With a tighter budget then a Husqy 357XP or a stihl MS362.

I use a 441 as my day to day saw and love it but im cutting down a lot more timeber than you will be.

I was looking for the same sort of thing about this time last year.

The woodsman on the estate said get a Husky, professional model with at least 60cc. After a bit of research on forestry websites and forums I went for a Husky 365. Its 66cc, 18" bar (though can take longer) and is a tough solid no nonsense foresters tool. It doesn't have 'auto' tensioning, 'easy start' or anything like that.

It has a reputation with foresters for being extremely strong with a bullet-proof engine. I've cut up ash and oak to 2 ft thick and yew to 18" and it ate them. But its light enough to use for limbing and cutting out trees that are hung up. Top quality professional all rounder.

I bought it from Ramages in Lancashire 01704 896246 or: www.husqvarnachainsaws.co.uk

Husky specialists and very helpful people. They were also one of the cheapest I found at the time. 365s on their website now for £552.25. Its a lot of saw for the money. :good:

stick a new pot and piston on the 026 they are about 55 quid from mister and fairly easy to fit, if you are set on buying new tfm superstore do good prices on stihl, if you are chucking the 026 i wouldnt mind it for bits

Mark,

Tried anew piston - it ran for half an hour and died again £70 quid for nothing - the bits I left with the guy who did it as payment - hence I do need a new one. If I'd had the bits you'd have been welcome to them.

Cheers.

I looked around for a good deal on a Stihl last year and found almost all official suppliers were price fixed on their saws. Is this still the case does anybody know?

Not sure. You should be able to get around 25% off retail price. Stihl normally put their prices up by 5% in January as well.

Ramages, Burscough

My local chainsaw shop.

Men in overalls, with black oily fingers.

An extraction fan spills out onto the street when they are testing saws in the upstairs workshop, the noise of engines revving and the smell of 2 stroke.

Great fellas, taught me how to sharpen chains.

Funnily enough they advised me to use Aspen, a synthetic fuel, as an occasional user it doesn't 'break-down' like normal petrol.

Can't comment on the prices (give Brendan a ring at Deva Mowers), but they are EXTREMELY knowledgable with saws.

Burscough - the only village where walking down the high street with a chainsaw is regarded as normal.
