cheap knife?

Yeah, Opinel every time. I find the number 8 about the right size for general skinning and gutting.

The handles can swell and make the blade tight to open but only if they get really soaked. More importantly the blades sharpen up to a stupidly sharp edge - you won't get anything that cuts better for the money. :good:

Not sure how old now, a no.7 that is a lot shorter than the new no.6 I got to take over from it;

Thought I had lost it then it turned up in a spare coat! 15-20 years old and just coming good for my needs bellying Rabbits and skinning them. Now who will I leave my unused no.6 to in my will...... :hmm:

I've always been a sucker for a good knife,and amongst many others I have three Opinels.As others have said,steel sharpens easily and well.A gun who shoots locally brings with him a gala pie for the beaters and carves it into slices with the biggest Opinel I've ever seen....blade(and therefore handle)must be about 8" long,maybe more! :good:

Just remembered;the biggest Opinel(think it was real)I've ever seen was a display piece in a gunshop in Barnard Castle.Huge bloody thing!

Dont know why my previous post was deleted as I was being serious when I said a Stanley knife.

They are just the job for gutting rabbits :yes: especially when you have a lot to do as you can have the blade half out and you wont Pearce the guts. Makes the job much quicker :good:

Yep, a work mate used to use the felt ripper for gutting, not so good for hocking though.

I have literally dozens of Opinel knives, I can usually only find one or two at a time though. For gutting rabbits I use a folding stanley type knife with a hook blade in it.
