Without wishing in any way to detract from Maine`s military achievements, a friend of mine who fought alongside him in the SAS, and has the photos to prove it, absolutely detested him and was severely critical of his leadership style.

 

Sorry to have to say that. But for many under his command he was a figure of intense dislike.

 

I only say this out of respect for the opinion of my elderly friend.I`m not knocking Maine personally since I never met him.

I dont think he would of won any popularity contests especially with the Germans.

Agreed gentlemen. My friend was a senior NCO and I`ve served in a disciplined service so we both understand how the chain of command works.

 

Once again, and only because this debate has previously caused my elderly friend some considerable angst, he used two words to describe Maine - Violent psychopath.

 

And this is from someone who served initially in the LRDG and latterly in the SAS, serving in Germany, Southern Ireland,was en route to Japan before they were nuked, and Palestine after the war.

 

Although you don`t want to believe everything you read in it,the Wikipedia entry for Mayne, especially the latter part which details some of his mental health problems serves to put him into context.
