Longish Retrieve from Icey Broad

This is my older dog Astra sorting out a diving duck shot by Grandalf, the retrieve was from a broad we had to break into to shoot last week, the bird was dipping under and I was very happy with the way she worked it out, she has also sussed swimming round the deeks rather than the short cut a lot of dogs take and then get caught up in the lines

Very nice, Pavman - good work, good dog!

Wondering though why you would handle on a diver rather than trust the dog's eyes (and nose) to locate it for the retrieve?

Because the duck went under and left and the dog went right into the wind trying to locate it, so she would not see or wind it so a small correction required to bring her back left, what you dont see is me get her attention and give her a left signal thats why she turned as she did

Good call, pavman. Admittedly much easier when they don't have to work the nose or "much" of the eyes to find the bird, either.

As shot about 600 yards out with an 800mm telephoto.

Pavman is being very nice about this retrieve.

It was an excellent piece of dog work in difficult conditions.

The only reason his dog was in the water is that mine - Merlyn - had got all confused and given up!

(He was tactful enough not to mention that).

He also gave this old man a super day out in very strange, for this year, weather. (Frozen Broad).

It involved lots of ice-breaking with his canoe and ice breaking with paddles etc before we could even get the 'coys in the water.

Thanks Dan,

Grandalf

He didnt happen to drop you into a very deep ditch full of water, expose you to the crazy duck lady, or drown you on a shingle beach aswell did he??????????

She looks fabulous Dan! Give my Love to Shaz.

Good retrieve :good: but ive also seen dogs that just wont give up in that cold water and the rest is history

I've got to agree. Diving ducks can evade a dog for so long I prefer shoot the injured duck in the water and send the dog for a dead duck - especially in icy conditions.

If within range - and the dog's "out of the sights" i.e., at a remove from the duck - same here. But it might also be that you'd need to call the dog off the retrieve (a tough proposition with a determined retriever) and fire up the old outboard motor for pursuit. That happens often when gunning sea ducks in coastal waters - you don't want a dog to get hypothermia or exhaust itself going out to sea.

Who's the nouveau chap posting just above you, WGD? (Glad to see you gracing us with your presence again, NTTF.)

No - But on our previous outing, when he had promised that an old man would only have to get out of his vehicle and step into the hide along the river Alde, it resulted in two miles walk/trek each way along a shingle beach carrying all our gear, tea in a workman's hut after his truck had been pulled from said shingle beach by a 22 tonnes dumper truck, and carrying his gun as well as my own for the return trip.

You have obviously enjoyed a flight with him as well - it's always an enjoyable event and never dull!
