America tests their latest Jet

This video link is fresh (for the public). It was made just six weeks ago in the Atlantic, just off Newport News (Hampton Roads), Virginia.

These are the latest sea trials of the F-35B on the USS Wasp. They were very successful, with 74 VL's and STO's in a three week period.

The media and the program critics had predicted that we would burn holes in the deck and wash sailors overboard. Neither of which happened. You will notice a sailor standing on the bow of the ship as the jet rotates.

That was an intentional part of the sea trials.

No catapult... No hook.... It’s a new world out there!

The shape and scope of warfare worldwide just changed.

I don't know about you but I somehow think I have seen this technology before - we were there before our time. They are talking like they invented it. - Improved it maybe.

Now if they could invent a ramp at the end of the flight deck i think that would help with lift

Strange this as the one they are trying to sell us for our new carrier is having bother landing on carriers

Probably supersonic though isn't it which the Harrier wasn't (that isn't a criticism of the Harrier btw!)

Invisible to radar too I'll warrant, to fight the invisible enemy airforces that threaten America....

They should find a way to make the B52-Spirit hover :P or bring back the Blackbird!

10 to 1 someone will open the front loading washing hatch and rip the cover off. I wonder why it wasn't hinged at the leading edge.

Well thats another brit invention we couldnt afford to develop. Probably supersonic definately stealthy and long distance threat engagement. Sometimes I wonder who runs the US, the government or the military.

Never anyone below the rank of major in the usaaf - rather large salary bill !

Not hinged on leading edge to increase airflow into huge vertical fan behind the cockpit?

Agreed, we threw the harrier out with the bathwater..........

A bit like the RAF in the 50/60/70's saying the v bomber fleet could strike anywhere in the world vs a decent cruise missile system..... it took alll the vulcan fleet plus all our air to air refuelling assets to put 2 airframes over stanley at high level in 1982 .... and they missed..

fly navy..... and army!

Really, we should not develop anything ourselves... shoving good money after bad...... buy US and build over here on licence... everything from small arms to warships.

One of the test pilots in the clip was a lt. so not ALL Major upwards. I stand corrected.... it was Lt Colonel, so you are quite probable right there..

My eldest daughter's Godfather was Lt.Col in the USAF before he retired, used to fly MH53 Pave Low's

I think your suspicions are right though Kes... ultimately it's the military/'agencies' that really pull the strings in the US... not the Whitehouse... I am willing to bet there is plenty that goes on over there that the President doesn't know about because it is 'need to know' and is 'above his paygrade.' Very hypocritical system!

Military salaries aren't as big as some would imagine.. certainly over here Lt Colonel or equivalent is ave mid £60k accross the services, not a huge amount when you think that's quite a way up the food chain!

the yanks have been after the Harriers since a new squadron of sea harriers destroyed their 'top guns' on a visit 20 odd years ago, now they've got all of them. Makes you wonder how much of that and lots of other spurious goings on is part of our 'special relationship', which seems to be if there's something they want we agree to it or they go home and take their ball with them........

Did i read the other day they're developing a supersonic airliner........I thought they were totally anti that idea.

Were you asleep during the whole world trade centre thing...

a supersonic attack jet could well have made a big difference to about 2595 people...

Wouldn't have needed to be supersonic... just any of the attack jets stationed in the area would have done!

Jeez....next your going to be blaming us for Justin Beiber (he's Canadian BTW)

Looks nice but my question is how do you get the thing back on the carrier when the directional jet and/or the vertical turbine is damaged? There is always the ditch and let a runabout pick you up but that's not really cost effective.

BTW those were likely Marine Corps pilots. The ranks on the cockpits were not Naval ranks and the Air Force doesn't fly off carriers, but most aircraft carriers have Marine contingents aboard.

Only thats kills our defence industry because of ITAR we would not be able to sell anything to the saudi's kuwaiti's etcf without US state dept say so and they wont but will let the US manufacturer sell to whoever is flavour of the month. (if the CIA havent already)

1964 to 2012 took them long enough! probably just waiting for the patent to run out!
