Morning Goose

Went down the foreshore this morning - not ideal conditions frost & no wind  A fair puckle Geese on the move but were flighting high :/ A small skein landed in the field behind & a couple of guys shooting the field were popping away at them. Anyhoo the geese started to flight & were circling about to land in the field - a few came within range but I knew they would have been lower with the next sweep  so I let them pass me - only to hear the muppets blasting away at them :angry: they must have been 100/120 yards from them  I will know the next time & take them when I have a decent shot (not wait so we can all get a shot like they should have) After that I slipped back down the shore a couple of hundred yards & the birds started flighting in to the other side of the field :good: They were still high but nearly circling back over the shore. One goose made the mistake of going a little to far, I hesitated with my first shot but the second folded it in the sky. All down to old grey beard now & he ventured out over the mud to present a perfect retrieve from the river :good: Don't know if the videos will work on here - if not I will stick them in the video section

Nice photos, and videos Tam. Would love to see skeins of geese like that around here. While we are on the subject of shooting high Geese I was walking my dogs last night and a small skein of about 15 canadas went directly over me about 50 yards up, they flew on all the while climbing so I stood and watched. About 1/2 a mile further on some muppet let of 3 shots at the Skein, by this time they must have been a good 120/150 yards high.

Does anybody expect to bring a goose down at that sort of range? best case complete miss or possibly a lightly pricked bird, in this case they were flighting into Slimbridge WWT centre, not good when birds arrive possibly injured due to carrying shot.

Personally 30-35 yds max for me only because i try to make it as easy on the dog as poss. If using something like remi hd's or heavy shot you could stretch that to 45-50 yds but risk loosing a wounded bird. Never understood why people even bother shooting at birds that high tbh who expects to kill them at 100+ yds

Well done you and well done senior dog!

Great too to learn some new words thanks to P/W. "Puckle" is a new one for me and I like it! Assume it is Scottish vernacular? When you get your independence, could you ask nice Mr Salmond to publish a really good Scottish - English dictionary as I would like to understand and enjoy everything that is going on, when I foray across the Irish Sea to shoot in Scotland.

Many thanks and have a great end to the season.

please - 30-35 yds they are on your barrels if you re any good. 30-35 yds are gonna drop about 45 yds - get a good dog if you cant send it on further than that. we shoot them at 40-45 yards, drop them 50-60 yards - our dogs find them no problem but our dogs get a lot of work when we are goose shooting

Each to there own, it also depends on what you are shooting them over. If over stubble or over splashes then the distance the goose drops from you doesn't really matter. But out on the foreshore where the dog has 40 - 50 yards of waist deep mud to cross then drag a great big canada back, it starts to make a difference as to whether you pull the trigger or not!

les all your duck and goose shooting is done inland , it's totally different on the foreshore our dogs have a lot more obstacles to contend with ie real soft mud creeks but most of all fast running tides for them to swim against ...

so don't try to big your dogs up lol they both do the same job but some retrieves are more hard for fowling dogs ....
