scolopax
hello lads. you guys are well dedicated.to fowling traveling all them miles for your sport .i in my younger years done many a trip to the solway/wigtown. just for night or morning flight. them where the days. i am lucky enough to have accsess to marshes on my door step have shot them for 30yrs now average mileage round trip 15 miles. did any of you lads ever shoot at southport permit marsh it used to cost 2 quid per permit per day. well gone now . it was absolutely great when conditions where right. Perhaps better its not any longer open for all commers, people died out there nd i think the council were left with little real choice. The current situation with Southport is equally as crazy though I used to shoot the Southport day ticket area, fantastic place, used to drive from east coast to west coast for a days 'fowling. Not many places where you could go 'blind' and still have a reaonable chance of a Pink off the foreshore. There used to be literally clouds of Wigeon out on the tideline, we used to think they were Knot until the warden put us straight. Tragedy when the small day ticket stretch was lost, nothing to do with the wildfowlers being drown which occured many years before, but was entirely due to the council handing over management of the adjacent fresh marsh reserve to our friends the RSPB. lister1
It was my first year wild fowling this season. I absolutley loved every second out on the marsh. I even bagged a couple of birds. One pink and a wigeon. I also enjoyed the company of some fine folk from this forum.
jonnybgood
i have always wondered, what part was the "ticket" marsh at southport. i know the area quite well, is it the marshland to your right as you come onto the coast road, or to the inland side of the road? misser
sitty tree - well remember southport ticket marsh shot it for many years - fantastic place - used to sit out nearly all day when there was no time limit & i was a lot younger (and more stupid!) sadly all gone now - atb - regards
misser
dont know why that last post has just gone thru - posted it last night as i thought initialpost did not seem to post - the permit marsh was from the old sand road to a small boundary fence, small car park and observation platform - there were a number of deaths which was extremely sad due to this i was under the understanding the council gave it to southport wf to 'police' hence the 10 tickets per day, it was subsequently lost because the rspb purchased the land adjacent - there was a judicial review - the council asked the public, they were ok with the shooting carrying on (not the answer the council wanted to hear) and they still revoked the lease - robbed!!. the rspb/enviroment agency have purchased another approx 400acres (i think) opposite warton and have managed to turn good reclaimed agricultural land into saltmarsh - as if theres not enough, the marsgh is fast growing, its nearly at the pier now from the old sandworks for anyone that knows southport - will stop now knackered fingers!! - atb - regards

I know the land at hesketh bank, reclaimed only 30 odd years ago to farm, now gone full circle and put back to marsh land! crazy! there loosing land to the sea on the east! With out the rspb knockin holes in sea walls on the west!
misser
jonnybgood - agree totally - someone mentioned a figure of approx 5 million (dont quote me on this) to put this 400 acres back to saltmarsh - cheap() when the country's supposedly broke & natures doing it for free at the other end! - atb - regards
scolopax
and no doubt we the tax payer will have paid for it in some way. The RSPB have money to burn and have organisation queuing up to give them money, i.e landfill tax etc.

oxfordfowler
This is a thread from the end of last season 2011/12 reopened. I won't be adding up the costs incurred for the 2012/13 season, looking back at last year is frightening enough and the increase in fuel cost alone . Interestingly I've just had a look at my bag record for the 2012/13 season - 44 Ducks, 12 Geese (1 more Duck than last season). And Yoggy you've used my "new" gun - that will be the Benelli Super Vinci. But it will be nice to have a go with your new SBE next season. I need that pay grade I'm not as lucky as you to have all that shooting on your door step . Edited March 7, 2013 by oxfordfowler
nic
Just done a rough calculation assuming 30mpg and fuel at 1.42 a litre (which is what my costs would be), and that's £906.42, or to put it another way, £16.48 a bird! That's before you look at carts, food/drink etc! When you break it down like that you start to wonder if you're right in the head! But, like you, I'll be on the marsh again next September! But when you compare that the driven game, its a damn site cheaper and much more enjoyable. last season was between 2 and 10 mile round trip dependant on which part of the Dee i went on Now I live full time in Glos its 10 - 60 dependant on which part of the Severn and next year my trips to Scotland will be 420 each way instead of 310 its a good thing she enjoys shooting and eating what we shoot as she reads this as well Nic Edited March 7, 2013 by nic
figgy
A 20 odd mile round trip for me and also blanked quite a few times later in the season. Started well and went downhill but enjoyed every flight and looking forward to next season as my little cocker dog is coming on a treat Figgy

I actually changed my mind about the SBE, and opted for one of the new Browning A5`s. And yes you`re right Stu, to have all the Nene Washes on my doorstep I am lucky. I suppose I take it for granted and should be thankful I have no travelling costs.
