njc110381
I've been thinking about this for a while now and I've decided I want another good scope. Nothing top of the tree but good, and I don't know which one?! At the moment I have an 8x56 S&B on my .338, a Bushnell Elite on my 7-08 (both of these come in at £500+ but under £1k) then an MTC on my .223 and a Leupold VX1 3-9x40 on my Hornet. Oh and a Docter 6x42 on my .22lr. So, the .223 and Hornet scopes aren't first class. They're good, but not that good. I've decided to either move the MTC to the Hornet and buy for the .223, or most likely put a nicer scope on the Hornet. I figured it deserves it as that's the gun I use the most yet it has the worst scope of the lot! So I want a zoom scope that goes up to 12x or 15x, has a fine crosshair and that is great in the dark. Budget around £750ish. So far I'm thinking another Docter (slightly over) or perhaps a cheap Zeiss (slightly under)? Your thoughts chaps? njc110381
Make sure your missus has enough pencils for her students before you go frivelisly throwing money on something. Someone's got a good memory! A scope is there to be enjoyed. Pencils are most certainly not! She quite recently went nuts on posh handbags with encouragement from me - I don't mind her spending money if it's for her but the school has a budget and it's not my, or her, problem! See, you've got me ranting again now! Scopes... Which scope do I need?! Edited March 16, 2012 by njc110381

hendersons
Get a new zeiss duralyt. You can get them for about £650 and are very good for the money. Jim at work has a couple on his rifles and I can't fault them at all. Nick

Pointer
I put a Burris Fullfield II 4.5 - 14 x 42 Ballistic Plex on my Hornet.....really nice combo. You'll have a bit of change to take the other half out for a meal and stay in the good books
Dunkield
Second hand Swarovski 4-12x50 or Second hand Swaro 4-12x56 (I just let one go for £700). or Or a 4-16x50 Swarovski (bought mine seconhand on ebay for £595, I could probably flog it today and make 100 on top of that)
mick miller
Or an MTC Genesis, I've just put one on my hmr and I have to say the picture is almost as good as my Zeiss (seriously, it's very close). The Genesis of course is less than half the money, great at night too, the reticule is superb, illuminated and you get 20x mag. Just a thought. Alycidon
Hornet or 223 there is no need to a large scope. I put a Ziess 3x9x36 on that 17AH you sold me, will do all you want out to 250-300 yards easily. Small, light neat and world leading ( in its day) optics. Just so so hard to find them these days, I now have two, the last one took me several years to find. A
al4x
blimey you can ID foxes at 300 yards in the dark at 9 mag, far better eyes than me. Personally its a hard choice I've always gone 2nd hand and have no regrets, must say my swaro PV is a nice reasonably light and compact scope and fitted in the budget. One thing about decent second hand glass is its rare to loose money on it.

I am in the same boat looking for a decent scope and am also struggling with what to do - I had a Swaro Habicht PV and it was great scope - I stupidly sold it... I'm heading to the states in april though and will see what is on offer as they also have a cracking section of second hand scopes at a snip so i may treat myself there....can't decide between Swaro, S&B, Zeiss, Nightforce or sightron....how ould folks rate theses from 1-5? njc110381
I might have a 4-16x50 schmidt for sale if you can be tempted? Tempted?! Of course I am. PM me and let me know what money you want for it and I'll see if I can do it in a timescale that suits you. You could buy a lot of crumpets for that kind of money Don't you start! These arguements are rarely about the money.

Regards, Gixer garyb has just bought a nice zeiss got christened last night and seems pretty clear, though the puppy he shot (well it came in like one) was only about 20 yards away and with white light so may need more experimenting with The only thing would put me off the nightforce is the weight but depends what its going on, so far I think swaro have the edge over S&B but little experience of the rest. Last time I looked (long time ago) European glass was more in the US that it could be had for over here, but I guess if you get a favourable exchange rate? I prefer Swarovski to S&B, but I keep being told Zeiss are better, so I have avoided looking though them as it could get expensive Only ever looked through Nightforce at the gamefair but even there I couldn't see what the fuss was about, as Al4x says they weigh a ton as well.
