al4x
It's top end price wise but if clean may make a good buy. If you know nothing either take someone who does or get an AA check etc done on it

djgeoff
im lookin at same spes one as you for 2500 , iv heard the head goes on them often ? well thanks for all the info, as i know naff all about them i asked mate who works on 4 x4 and he said don't touch anything before 2006 they had crank shaft failure problems especially on the turbo ones as there was so much torque, they normally fail around 75k, had one in for repair last week with crank breaking up, and some have had bottom pulley shear off with major damage. i pointed out well this car i am looking at has 99k on clock, he then said well you will be taking hell of a chance, if it was me i would give it a miss, also he said don't get the 2.5 cc get the 3.0 ltr version they have timing chains not belts, same engine as pajero. so i have decided to give it a miss, but thanks any way chaps
englishman-in-wales
I have come to learn that no matter what car / 4x4 you get, every single motor has common faults, some more than others...my 57 L200 has never missed a beat, she has cost me a set of tyres and that is about it, yet my mates 08 L200 has had issues on a weekly basis it seems and has cost him a fair bit recently... al4x
I don't think he is that clued up they didn't fit 3l to any of them. Cranks are rare to go heads did have a problem but they aren't a mega repair and mostly affected 2003 models. I'm on my second one the first I had the head problem and it was under a grand to sort. The second has just hit 90k and has been a great buy. The only issue I've had was the crank pulley separated that was £200 but that's it sailed through each mot simply cheap motoring depreciation wise. 6k with one owner and 60k on it. Great truck for shooting and general use. You'll always get bad reviews on anything but pays to get them put in perspective there are a lot of l200's out there

WelshLamb
the l200 forum isnt known for being all too helpful, or so I am told. My advice is, dont get one. Myself, I have never driven one but a few lads I know have them and they are thirsty, not great a ride and horrendously unreliable (and the mitsis are not much better )

working dog
On the forums, L200.org was a real clique - if you weren't in the inner sanctum your posts were pretty much ignored. L200forum is a lot better On the L200 - try it, you may like it. I have an 07 and love it! No real issues to moan about but the 50K service was £700 which hurt a bit! That said, the engine was so much smoother after the service

And if the second one was total **** as well did you think "well, thats two I've had that were ****, think I'll get another one..." ? And then why get a defender as they are super reliable aren't they. Simply in this case the decent nick equivalent defender or hilux won't be far off twice the price that's a lot of potential repair money

al4x
a lot depends on condition FM which with pickups varies hugely. With initial purchase price its always worth buying as clean a well looked after one as possible.
Dirty Harry
I have a 54 plate L200. I've had it 6 years and had no problems. It's only got 70,000 on the clock and only does about 2500 a year now and use it a lot off road. It's insured with coop/CIS and they are very reasonable.
