old rooster
She didn't come with a pedigree, not a great concern to me having seen the parents, She is gradually getting me trained but I think it will be a while yet before I will be able to keep up with the little sod !! I prefer conventional docked tails on springers but she was "long docked" when we got her so that was what we are stuck with, just hope it doesn't get damaged when she is working. Quite enjoy getting a few pics, it's just a matter of taking loads and dumping most, one good thing about the modern digital cameras. Thanks for the comments guys !!! pavman
My Grandad sat me down a long time ago and said, "son, life is to short for carp fishing and training spaniels" good luck, looks like a lot of fun
Cranfield
Great pictures, springers certainly have a zest for life. I knew a chap with a springer that had a long docked tail (not a full tail) and he never had any problems with it when she was working. You could certainly see it over the thick cover. sutty
OR mate, Mines" long docked" as well,( anyone know why they do that, seems silly to go to the trouble and not make a proper job ?) It dosent bother him, in fact it never stops wagging from morning till night, and as Cranfield says its a good marker in cover. Speaking of cover, i have to spend the rest of today combing "sticky buds" from his coat+lugs after this mornings jolly,(thats if he will stand still long enough) regards Sutty (PS just a thought, perhaps they leave em long to use as a RUDDER!!) MC
Sutty, A little tip for you regarding sticky buds, If you leave them for a day they seem to just come out. They loose their stickiness. Cheers Martin
sutty
Thanks for that Martin, i will give it a try, its just the ears that i am more concerned with. I like to get them out of there in case they work there way further in and cause problems later. but i will give leaving the rest, a try ,cheers. old rooster
Sutty, A little tip for you regarding sticky buds, If you leave them for a day they seem to just come out. They loose their stickiness. Cheers Martin Makes some sense really as the idea behind all these sticky type seeds is that a critter goes hurtling past, gets the seed stuck to its coat and at a later stage the seed drops back to earth and grows. old rooster
Took her out with me ferreting today, still managed to catch 7 nice full grown rabbits !!! Still a bit overgrown to really get at them but its knocked the dog out for a bit. Been a lovely hot day so its now time to mow the lawn then have a sit in the garden before having a go at some Canada's on the stubble this evening. Its a hard life and I just know you will all sympathise but it has to be done !!!
old rooster
Been away from the forum for what seems like ages due to starting up another business just over a year ago so just thought I'd drop by and say hello. Jess is coming on well, just under 2 years old now and getting the hang of what I want her to do if a little fast off the mark at times! She will retrieve from water, pigeons, ducks, pheasants and on Friday my first ever woodcock. I've been taking her beating at a small local shoot this season, first shoot day, first drive and she put up some lovely birds from heavy cover, we worked up to the boundary fence (sheep wire with a very thick hedge) from which she emerged with a lovely cock bird in her mouth. Trouble is it hadn't been shot!. She brought it to hand so I took it unmarked from her, put her on sit and chucked it up to fly over the waiting guns, all of which misssed it as it flew overhead. Boy did that pheasant have a story to tell that evening! She has also correctly picked up a number of strong runners so it is difficult to "explain" the difference between an unshot bird and a runner I guess? Overall a few things to keep on top of, mainly over exuberance, but that is better than having a dissinterested dog IMHO. Many sincere thanks to NTTF for all the good advice, I'll probably need more before I'm fully trained but all in all it has been an interesting and rewarding experience.
