This is an old story now in Orkney as it happened a few years ago but I understand a certain goose guide accidentally discharged his shotgun in the hotel room he was staying in & it was never reported to the Northern Constabulary ! as the hotel owner accepted it was an accident the damage to the hotel room was put right & the Northern Constabulary never heard about it ! . Surly a fire arms offense was committed or a whole number of offenses were committed under the firearms act & this should have been reported ? or should it not have been ? :hmm:

You really have a dislike of foreign goose shooters dont you , It may have been stupid , it may have been dangerous but if no one was hurt and it was accidental and the damage was paid for why report it to the police ??

If you were shooting with your best mate and he accidentally made his gun go off would you be straight on the phone to the old bill , I think not.

I know what you mean about the accident part Fenboy but was an offense committed ? remember the part of your shotgun cert has a bit on that says about public safety & having a loaded shot gun in a public place ? or is yours different from mine where you live ?

I would say a hotel room is not a public place , I think the legislation you refer to would be so as people are not walking down the street with loaded weapons.

Accidents can and will happen , I like to think of myself a safe shooter but admit that a couple of months ago I managed to leave a cartridge in the magazine tube of my semi auto , luckily I always check again when taking the gun out of its slip .

I also had a friend who shot a hole in his bedroom ceiling while "practising" he had left two cartridges in the gun weeks before , another I know left a loaded gun against a farm gate and only missed the gun when he go home some 20 miles later.

So it happens , but you need to learn from it.

Happened in the Bull at Long Sutton, Lincs, years ago. Everyone thought it was hillarious. Cost the culprit a large round of drinks.

Why do you young guys always want to involve the fuzz?

Accidents happen. When I cut my finger in my workshop at the bottom of my garden, a fairly common occurance, I don't make a report to 'Elf and Safety'.

Just get on with life and enjoy.

If no one was injured i would have thought not , but then I am not a lawyer

The common knowledge here in Orkney is the shot from this guide went threw the ceiling into the very bed room of the hotel owner & came out some where near his bed ! now had the hotel owner received a the charge of shot into the soles of his feet & private parts would that has been classed as a mere accidental discharge ? :hmm: I think not !.

Your first thread or two about foreigners were fairly interesting, sort of like breaking news. Sorry but I have to say they have become predictable and irritatingly tedious, the fact that it's a thread about ancient history makes it even more so.

If it's such common knowledge I'm sure the local constabulary would be aware of it by now. If they thought it worthwhile following it up I'm sure they would have done.

The fact is it happened on private property, nobody was hurt and all damages were settled amicably.

Maybe if the hotel owners balls were blown off there would have been a different outcome...but they weren't, so a bit of a non story really.

Great to see your humour is on tap this morning Poongtang ! Yes as we live in a small commuity up here every thing is published via the Ork bongo drums & I am sure the local cops heard about but as no complant was made I expect they did not make anything of it . But is disscharing a shot gun in a hotel room a none event ? Had I been in the room above or some ones wife & kidds had been in there then I promise you this , then the law would have been involved ! .

Dave G I have shot around the world ie Africa Australia America's UK Ireland but I have never taken a loaded shotgun rifle or hand gun into my hotel rooms let alone shot a hole into the ceiling to the room above ! . How about you ? this thread is about whether or not it was an offense under the firearms act to do so ? if you have worth while comment to make on blasting a hole in a hotel ceiling that has innocent paying guests staying in it then feel free ? . maybe....maybe not

ask BASC or your firearms dept and they will tell you for definate.

either way accidents happen, whats done is done..(as everybody else has said!)

True TJ91 I actually thought about that as seems no one on here knows so perhaps its one of those grey areas that are only decided in court ? I know or believe that having a shotgun in your car that is not in a securely fastened slip is an offense on a public road or car park correct ? even though the inside of your car is a private place ? & if the gun was loaded & went off accidentally is that just classed as a none event or a none story ? . I would have thought a hotel room is not classed as a private place as a number of hotel workers have access to your room ? even if it is locked by you ?.

I do remember some years ago a report in the shooting publications that some pistol shooters were on there way back from a meet & stopped for a pub lunch only upon returning to the car they found it broken into & the weapons gone & they were charged ! don't remember the outcome ? .

Perhaps a quick chat with FD department in Inverness my help .

Pole Star - as you obviously feel quite strongly about the issue - make the report yourself. That way, you will find the answer and prove yourself to be an honest citizen.

After you have had your chat with the FD department in Inverness, please let us know the outcome.

Failure to do so might lead to the suspicion that you are merely a stirrer.

Pole Star, have the boot people got shares in the hotel ? and do they have paying clients that spend loads of silly money in the hotel ? will they be using the hotel this year if the courts have there say in favour of RSPB etc etc

Whats the name of the hotel Pole Star I may give the bar a visit when I am up in last week September and I could ask them about their discharge problems.

A loaded gun inside! scary stuff. There may not be a law against it but any responsaible gun owner should know better and all the **** taking aside so should all of the PW members who comment on this site. Anyone who has a loaded shotgun or firearm inside a room of a house, hotel, B&B etc should not have a certificate. No excuse.

Sadly we all know what happened to the young keeper and his girlfreind when he had a loaded shotgun accidently discharge in his cottage.

Cheers
