Ps at what age do you start to get to the 'not shooting stuff, just happy to be out' phase?

I don't think it is at any age, it is probably when you feel you have done enough, I like beating every week during the season, but if I was in the shooting line every Saturday I would soon get bored of that - but I really look forward to our 2 or 3 days a year.

I used to laugh at the reports in the BDS mag of stalkers turned photographers, but I have had some great evenings getting right in amongst deer just with the camera.

My advice if you're considering giving it up would be: Don't sell all your gear unless you absolutely need the money.

Let a few weeks or months go by, and you'll most likely get the urge to go shooting again.

At least then, you'll be all ready to go, and won't have lost a wad of cash replacing what you sold :good:

If I HAD to give up shooting, i'd probably take up some hobby where i'm making stuff... Buy another metal lathe, try leather working, something like that.

Reading posts on here and other forums it's interesting how important shooting (or any other hobby/sport) is to some people.

Because I have always many and varied interests it really wouldn't bother me if I gave up shooting, I would just do something else.

Like others in this thread, I am bit off shooting at the moment anyway but it will come back in time I know that.

In fact I didn't shoot a roebuck I had in my cross hairs the other morning because I had done the hard bit getting into 10 yards of it, and to be perfectly honest I couldn't be bothered with all the faffing about afterwards

I can identify with this. I've been getting fit for just over a year now and it has seen shooting take a back seat mainly because it's impossible to fit everything in. I've Passed over on my place on the pheasant syndicate because I actually get more out of the beating than the shooting. This year I can focus on making progress with my dog in the beating line and enjoying it more with my son. Trying to shoot, work the dog , keep an eye on my boy and lead the beating line was just too much. I reckon I'll get a couple days shooting this year and if I don't fancy it one weekend then I can just swerve it without losing out on the £140 that the day would have cost me.

Similarly with the stalking, still only shot a handful, but have stalked up to quite a few more without feeling the impulse to pull the trigger. Glad it's not just me who feels that way.

I should add I never sell any of my stuff when I go a bit cold on one hobby or another.

Like Raja I have got back into cycling after a long lay off and look forward to getting out on the bike a lot more than shooting <at the moment>

I still have 2 shooting trips booked for later this year, I am looking forward to both, the keenness to get out on the bike will no doubt subside when the even colder/wetter weather gets here, so it will be all change again.
