Hi guys, lady's day is coming up on the shoot and my wife really wants to shoot. She's had a little go on the 12 but finds them too heavy and too much recoil so I'm considering getting her a 20 I've never owned a 20 but believe they pattern very well with little recoil.

Any advice would be great full

Thanks look forward to your responses.

I think you have been mis informed...... Recoil is Newtonian physics, felt recoil is down to the individual a heavier gun will recoil less, a lighter load will recoil less put the same load in the lighter gun......

Get her a gun that fits and if possible borrow it!

If you have to rush it make sure the dealer will take it back!

Hi

My missus is very slight framed and arms like kermit the frog so weight has always been a problem for her. WE purchased a 20gauge auto which she could handle both the weight and recoil an absolute doodle 24gram cartridges cycled the action nicely. She has now moved onto an over and under though. its a 12gauge as well. What we found was shooting a 21gram cartridge sorted the kick problem out and is good enough for clays. As for weight we have borrowed a 27" barrelled O/U and that has made it easier to handle as it brings the weight closer to her. As she pre-mounts before calling, show mounts the gun straight up and brings it down then calls, this stops her arms taking all the strain.

The other problem with 20g is the cartridge costs. £210 for the cheapest 1000 near us so alot happier now shes on 12g. We will be looking for a 26"-28" barrelled O/U this weekend at the midland show

Very common a friend of mine is "petite" and was insistent she needed a 20 bore............. She owns and shoots a 28" MC 686 12 Gauge fine with 21g loads its got an adjustable comb and big kickeez pad no worries at all.

The guns previous owner was a slender lady in her late 50's early 60's who bought it after owning a 20 bore and part ex'd it for a GD5 MK38 trap guns that had been teagued!

I have 2 20 gs a beretta SP and a 425 browning lightweight. They are both great, however recoil wise be v careful with a light gun,it is quite noticeable recoil.especially with 28g....however I find24/25g loads are lovely to shoot and do the job.

If pressed I would say the Beretta is the best,I think the SP looks right as a 20 g and prefer it in 20g to 12g. As others have stated above though a lightweight gun with too much cartridge recoils and whilst it is lighter to handle etc you can defeat the point of it if you 'overload it'. Your budget will need to be @ £800 ish for a good secondhand SP ......I bought mine new 7 years ago for £910 and would think I could sell it tomorrow for £800........thats the big advantage of a proven/trusted gun and in the SP I would say it is the benchmark 20g.Be warned though if you buy it for the Missus and try it she won't see much of it ! It is a great all round gun. Cartridge wise gamebore competition 24 g 8s are nice for clays.Eley grand prix 25g or Lyevale express 25g are a good balnce between hitting power without too much recoil.
