hedd-wyn
Im pretty clueless when it comes to 4x4s, but im looking to part x my sports car for something more practical. Ive recently found it hard ti get to certain areas in my permission (not talking hardcore off road here) and currently dont have enough boot space for my gear and for the dog. So im guessing that a 4x4 is what im looking for. I live in a pretty tight street so would need something managable, not too bulky. Like I said before, I havent a clue where to start here, and this is the first time Ive posted on the motoring section. My boy racer days are over chaps! aga man
what budget do have hedd. i would of course always try to push you towards a landrover, but if your tight for space then a neighbour has just bought a nissan x trail. he loves it and it looks a tidy little vehicle with plenty of room for the dog etc. atb aga man. neil3728
biggest factor is going to be your budget and how mechanically minded you are. I love landrovers to me they are the best 4x4 made (old ones especially) but need maintenance, not sure about others makes. I would try to shy away from cars that have any sort of electric 4 wheel drive mode. such as the hyundai tuson(spelling might be wrong) although advertisied as a 4X4 it was **** on anything more than a flat dry grass field. HDAV
What sort of driving do you mostly do, A roads (B roads) Mway.... length of journey etc, regular 30 mile commute or 3 mile trip to shops? HOw many passengers? small 4x4 you have Jimny, Vitara, Shogun pinin, Rav4, Xtrail, Freelander. I can recommend a good garage B&K Williams next to Tesco caernarfon, normally have a choice of mid price 4x4 for sale. As a nice car that has 4x4 and decent ground clearance I like the RAV4 SWB is 2+2, small boot. LWB is a 5 seater with decent boot. Xtrail also gets good reviews. HR-V/CR-V worth a look too nice cars
rabbiter
Grand Vitara, all the way mate, had a discovery and always had my hand in my pocket,i wish i got a GV years ago, never been stuck and have tried a few times on purpose but never happened, great little motors....DAZ
hedd-wyn
Mostly just for weekends really, my job has changed a bit recently which means my milage will be sinificantly lower that what it was five years ago. Being from Porthmadog originally means that all my permissions are around that area so you're talking about a 30mile round trip when out shooting, mosty b.roads. Im looking to spend between 5 and 8k (finance) and got my current car for part x Hedd Ps appreicate the response

neil3728
One thing that hasn't been said. no materr how good or bad the car is, it's the tyres that will make all the difference. I do a fair bit of offread driving in my Old 95 Disco. and that with the correct tyres is almost unstopable my bad driving lets the car down. With the wrong tyres the car won't make it out of the carpark. let alone through any mud. As you are looking to buy a car for shoting it might be worth looking at the tyres size and what threads are available. As a car the x-trail. do look good, looked at one before getting my FL2. HDAV
Dont bother looking at the x-trail, its an automatic petrol jobbie, drink petrol like its going out of fashion I meant xtrail in general not necessarily that one. Unfortunately the Llyn has a limited choice of car dealers and cars.....

Robl
Total leftfield suggestion here. Jeep Wrangler. It’s a fun convertible in the summer, it’s also a bloody good 4x4. It’s more comfortable than the Defender equivalents. You can get a decent TJ model for 3-4k. They come with 2.5 or 4l petrol engines so aren’t particularly economical. But, if you still want a toy for a car it’s one hell of a toy. A 4l straight six with no roof will make you grin all day long. If you pop out the back seats you could easily bolt in a decent box for a gun or two, and with the roof off it would be excellent to shoot from. If you want some luxury you might just about be in Disco 3 territory – decent ones can be had for about 10k now. If you want something a bit older and more rugged then a 3l Hilux Surf can be a good bet. Like someone up there said though – make sure you get decent M&S tyres on the car. For a road biased off road tyre I like the General Grabber UHP – but other opinions exist.

vampire
Had a look on the web site that shows all the warranty claims, lower the score the better, crv = 20.....breaks if driven over fields often ! kia sorrento = 40......highly rated on and off road, plus they have all the bells and whistles, mid 06 onwards are best. freelander = 120......td4 diesel, manual + lots of mods available discovery = 190.....nuff said really, top motor but dreadful reliabilty
