The MARSH is alive, with the sound of music :)

Music being 'peep peep', 'quack quack', 'honk honk' and best of all WHEEOOO :)

I had a bumper flight this morning, I've had a steady start to the season, but the marsh has been fairly quiet. I was hoping that the moon last week may have signalled the arrival of some of the migrants. I had my eye on a particular area this week, and decided to hit it this morning.

I was in the carpark by 04:45 and set foot on the marsh around 05:20. I was filled with hope once I dropped down the bank and heard wigeon whistling in pretty much every direction. The dog pushed some off the mud, but I tend to leave the gun in the bag until I'm in my preferred position, so the birds flew away unscathed.

When I got to the fret I thought about ambushing the water and shooting any birds that flushed. But I was confident that I'd see plenty, so I decided against it. Sure enough, there were wigeon on the water. They rose high and fizzed off to the right, so I sat down and took the gun out the case.

Within 1 minute they where back, the gun wasn't even loaded at this point so I quickly slid 2 super steel (no.3s) into the magazine, and pumped one of them into the chamber. The noise caused another pack to flush further down, and as they passed, I fired 2 shot into them.

The first saw a wigeon drop out the back of the group and I missed clean with the second shot. Then all hell broke loose!!

Pack after pack after pack of teal and wigeon where flitting up and down the channel, which was almost dry as it was at low water. Some of them cut the corner and nearly took my head off on their way. I picked my shots as some of where too close, and I had a break between each set of 2, so the dog could pick the birds.

By 7:00ish I had 3 wigeon and a mallard in the bag, I hadn't even thrown the decoys out! I stopped for a brew and a butty in awe of the sunrise and watched the duck silhouettes against the purple sky. Then I threw some decoys onto the water and got set for round 2.

Sure enough, the birds where all over them, and I shot 3 more duck before deciding that was enough for me. I could have easily shot my limit, but 7 duck is more than enough, and I knew i'd be in the good books if i got home early.

We've got friends over for a roast tomorrow, so I was hoping to put a few on the table. Everyone will get a wigeon crown each, and I'll be keeping a mallard and teal for myself.

A fantastic morning, which I won't be forgetting anytime soon. Shot of the day was the mallard drake, left to right crosser passing about 30ish yards out.

I wish I'd taken more pics :(

I saw loads of geese too, but the bag was heavy enough already  so I left them.

Now, time to get plucking :good:
