No duck coming into pond

Recommended Posts

Me and my mate have leased a promising looking pond but they duck don't appear to be using it readily enough! It has a lot of viegitation growing in it which the duck I think would eat it sits in a young wood with a 30-40 yard opening in it to allow the duck to flight in to it we have had duck on it but also have had slot of rain aswell and there are duck in the area so in at a loss as to how it's not working as a flight pond! Big sad face!!!!

Don't worry as others have said once the weather hardens and food is scarcer they will start feeding. Our pond is the same very few or no ducks coming. Had mallard following but watched it last night not a thing came in, but if you look around there are a lot of flashes and flooded bits with duck on them so they are there

See if you can get some young ducklings, they may be prey for the odd fox but will get other birds dropping in.

You can feed the young birds but all this takes time, so may not be the best option short term.

An Island or two is always best, but you could have some big logs floating and they will sun them selves on these.

Best of luck sounds a great find

We had a pond like this and we thought that the amount of weed on the pond was the problem. We made a small grappling hook and threw it out and pulled a little weed out every throw. Don’t go too mad because the stuff weighs a ton and you cant pull it out. When this was done we put about a plastic carrier bag of wheat into the shallows along the edge where the bank came down to the water that was about four inches deep at this point. We could see the wheat on the bottom. The duck then started to come in and were able to upend in the shallows. Mallard early and teal later. Although you have had duck into the pond as we had, we also thought that the water might not show through the trees with so much weed on it. Any way we got a load of duck on it every week after de weeding. Never had a problem with rats because the food was in the water and not on the bank.
