955i
We used to buy crow scarer bangers from the local gunshop when we were kids. Used to put them alight into empty glass milk bottles. I shudder at the stupidity looking back. I remember a good few years ago now coming across a bunch of kids (around 9-13 in age) who had built a bonfire on some rough ground and were trying to pull an empty one of the tall red gas bottles on to it!! Pointed out the error of their ways but it still makes me shudder what might have happened if they were left to their own devices :o

Blunderbuss
OK go ahead .............Fire crews called out with police escort to stop the firefighters being stoned, from memroy of 2011 27 A & E casualties most of them children, in this town alone. How much of a sense of proportion does it take for everyone to accept that fireworks are dangerous. I don't care if it is toe rags in the street or organised parties they are still dangerous. If you can't accept this simple fact then there's no point continuing this debate. People who stone fire-fighters are low life scum who also probably also abuse alcohol and drugs, rob for a living and beat their wives and kids etc etc. Normal people don't do that. It sounds like you live in a pretty grim place if that sort of thing is a regular occurrence, I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe that and the scummers who live there, not the fireworks are the problem? Why because a bunch of low life scum bags misuse fireworks (and many other things) should the law abiding who can be trusted to enjoy them safely be banned from doing so. What about banning the stones they throw at police? They are clearly causing 'incalculable harm', lets ban them.

This happens in many towns and cities in this country, it is not a regular occurrence where I live only on the 5th Nov qas elswhere, If the scummers did not have access to fireworks at his time of year there would be no problems. Its not a question of trust of the law abiding, its a question of amateurs (and others) who put on displays and making a right pigs ar se of it. Ban the stones .............your argument gets weaker and the hole your digging is getting deeper. Pick you up tomorrow ....past my nod time. guest1957
The sensible and law abiding should never have their activities restricted as a result of the thick few. My old man as a student saw the calor has tank on a fire. Fortunately the valve failed first and it shot on the air instead of splintering. Address the stupid for their actions, don't seek to restrict the law abiding many
gibby
So all you chaps complaining have never let off a single firework? If you have, and think you've taken every precaution, there would have been someone having the same hissy fit as you are right now. You can't please everyone. Muggins.
I don`t think people want them banned full stop, i don`t because it`s part of our heritage. Blunderbuss .. do you think it`s ok for kids to be letting them off twelve months of the year?? By allowing fireworks to be bought twelve months of the year you have got rid of a tradition. Scully
Personally I really enjoy fireworks and am sick and tired of the nanny state restricting the fun of others purely because of the activities of empty-headed morons.

You can buy them all year around now, there's no restriction on only selling them around Nov 5th. Most businesses only stock them then because thats when they're worth the hassle of getting them in. It's pretty amazing that people whose hobby is shooting can't see the parallel between banning guns and banning fireworks

Shooting and the guns used be they fac or air guns have some kind of regulation and and usually pretty strict conditions. No one (allegedly) can buy a gun and ammo from Del Boy's suitcase down at the market.......anyone can buy fireworks from such places. Thunderbird
I imagine they'll get banned soon enough. You don't have to be a 'rocket scientist' to know what a load of towel-heads might threaten to do with an artic-load of roman candles. VikingRebel
If someone would care to tell me if all of the fireworks in the world are worth the pain and agony a single child suffers who is injured because of fireworks (sometimes at a show organised by a responsible adult). Then I may question my values and the values of my fellows. If i remember correctly did not the "anti social" (rhetorical) use of firearms by some bring about a nation wide ban on the use of hand guns. No offense, but the "think of the children/if it saves one childs life" excuse is an extremely pathetic one at best. Its the last resort of somebody who has no real argument to back up their position. Besides, if we are going to ban things based on the fact that they might harm children, then you should probably just ban everything in existence. Certainly wouldn't be allowed to have cars, motorbikes, bicycles, multi-story buildings, staircases, swimming pools, fireplaces, trampolines, climbing frames, boats, canoes, trees, poisonous plants, pain killers, bleach, dogs, cats, horses, kettles, ovens, toasters, knives, and of course guns. All are capable of seriously injuring and killing children, so why are you not advocating for all of those to be banned too?
