You are leaping to conclusions about what huffhuff was actually getting at in his post, which was tongue in cheek.

Hi Zapp,

I don't think that I have made a quick conclusion, as we try to picture ourself as Gents, with traditions and code of conduct to the non shooting comunity, we should avoid writing certain things.....we have already many problems with various green people....lets not attract upon us the ..in brackets (racist) card, and with this I'm not saying that HuffHuff is racist (I know it was a joke), but for some people could be another reason to bad mouth the entire shooting comunity, there is absolutely no need to mention other countries, it could have been anyone, leaving behind this bag of geese, I think that the code of shooting practice, specify that in case you don't want to take home your bag, it should be discarded in 2 ways....Bin or buried, correct me if I'm wrong.

Pole star has a morbid hatred of Italian shooters - have a read and learn a bit of the history.

Had nothing been written on this forum about this isolated geese find then the only people to know about it would be about 18 people in the Orkney islands... who are a little bit insular. Yes this is big news for them, but it's not really - just last week on the farm I shoot a "group of people" dumped a dead cob horse in a ditch, about 200 cannabis plant bulbs were dumped in a gateway along with the usual two or three loads of asbestos.

On the mainland the police will have much better things to do, and adding perspective to the incident.... well... leave it to the locals to get themselves into a lather. They will bother the main land police, there will be 10 pages of Polestar having a pop at the Italians and then when it gets to the CPS on the mainland they will laugh their backsides off and do something more important and nothing will happen. That's about it.

Indeed, I completely agree with you. Maybe you should have a flick through the good polestars previous posts to see where that comment came from originally...

You are right HuffHuff, I should have explained my point about writing of other country people in a different way, It wasn't directed to you personally but in general, yours and Polestar was just an example of what we should avoid writing.

It's not MINE and polestars...it's just polestars (I was simply regurgitating one of his many rants) . But I can see without prior knowledge, it does look like me saying it. However, that is not the case. As already said, tongue in cheek.

Its high time a few posters on here grew up. Anyone who shoots a bag of geese , pheasants or any other game birds and then dumps them in the countryside brings our sport into disrepute and if any of you cant see that you should not be shooting. If we want to be shooting in 50 years time them we have to keep on the right side of public opinion and to a member of the public how can you defend such action. I can remember taking a group of school kids around a woodland reserve where deer shooting was allowed. At the entrance to the wood a stalker had dumped the guts from a red deer shot a few days before hand. It was a mass of flies and maggots and instantly turned 20 kids into antis. It would not have taken much effort to gut the deer off the path and cover the guts up.

Before anyone says they dump their corvids , so do I , but in a dustbin or farm rubbish skip where they are out of sight and any possible antis will not see them. Otherwise the birds I shoot end up on mine , or friends tables or it its a big bag of pigeons down to the game dealers. If anyone starts to shoot more geese than they can get rid of stop shooting.

Well said that man, wether they are a pest or not dumping them in a ditch field or anywhere else where the public can see is just not on, but as you say looks like a few posters either do or think this type of thing is fine they are certainly not sportsmen that's for sure.....

The simple fact is all on here know it is wrong, its highlighting the real issue is there should be a market for them if taken as true pest control. I assume bag limits are pretty much removed when they were certainly in September looking to cull large numbers to prevent habitat damage. That to me suggests that the primary reason for the cull is not for peoples own consumption, what happens to the bodies is to an extent irrelevant and far worse things happen to canada geese when they get culled in numbers in parks for instance. There is a big difference between sporting shooting and pest control, in this case it looks like the authorities are looking to slap a £50 fine on someone for littering and that is the extent of it.

I do not agree with some of your comments.

No one posting previously has said that it is fine for the geese to be dumped, or that they do it themselves. What was queried at first was how many geese were dumped, where and in what circumstances. Investigation work by some of the posters has clarified the issue rather better than Pole Star who lives in the Orkneys and should have been in a better position than most to put some facts out there but he failed to do that.

It also appears that there is some history on this forum which predates my time on it indicating a bias against Continental shooters in the Orkneys. This may have flavoured the original post.

Dumping shot birds is totally out of order, be it pheasants geese or any other, the anti shooting organisations Will love this news. Not long ago there was a link to an animal aid video which showed huge numbers of pheasants being left to rot, people on here were quick enough to start shouting about it being old footage and saying it doesn't happen now!! Looks like it still does to me!

The problem is that some of the people going to places like Orkney to shoot have no interest in what wildfowling is about and just want to pull the trigger!

they do but if you look the locals are having severe problems with geese hence an aim of shooting 5500 in September. Its no excuse for dumping but a dead goose doesn't do damage so assuming bag limits aren't being stuck to the issue we have is disposal. If they have to be shot the locals need an exemption to find an outlet for them whether that is the human food chain or pet one.

This is akin to fly tipping it has nothing to do with sporting shooting, they want to be very careful accusing visitors or bringing in extra restraints as shooters will bring in much needed revenue to their B&B's local shops etc etc You only have to look back on the photos section on here of a pickup in Orkney loaded up with geese certainly more than recommended bag wise and that was done with a proper guide. But if its in response to an organised cull then that is understandable. Its no different to canadas being rounded up in parks and put into landfill if you take the shooting part out of it the only issue we have is 40 being dumped which shows how rare it is if they are shooting 10,000's then most are not being disposed of in this way

The perceived 'problems' are with the resident non migratory greylag geese, hence the cull in September before the migrants arrive. The islands will now be home to 70+K icelandic greylag for the winter, there is no problem with them, in fact they were of consevation concern a few years back. It is highly likely these were the migratory Icelandic greylag that were dumped.

I am posting only to say how saddened I am that some PW Members feel that this dumped bag of geese is some kind of joke. If one tit with a gun does this, we all get labelled.

It is totally and utterly inexcusable. A waste of a fine creature. Shoot it and eat it or leave it alone.

The fact they were tied together is a bit of a mystery though.

Why would anyone tie geese into pairs in the field and then put them in a big bag? Sounds to me like they've been hung up in a chiller or larder, then for whatever reason, dumped in a field to get rid of them. Probably had a slaughter and had to many to deal with more like!!

I once heard a story of a group of farmers from Orkney who grouped together to corral around 600 flightless Greys in the summer time, necked them all, and burried them with a JCB. I wonder if this made the radio??

This does bring up an important point though. If the SNH get their way and manage to arrange the cull of 5500 resident Greys in a month, what are they going to do with them all?

Mark.

good point mark ,

a use for the meat should be sorted out before any major cull takes place , a exemption in the law for the culled birds would have to be the start and maybe basc could get a celebrity chef on board to help promote the meat /cooking .

40 dumped birds aint good for the sports reputation but on the grand scale of what goes on up the it aint the worst that could have got to the papers

Totally agree,

Having been on a recent trip up to the Orkneys and had a good few flights out with one of the guides I asked him about the so called cull and the numbers that were quoted. He said at the time that although the thought of a cull of the resident greys was not a bad idea it was very badly planned. Logistics, guns & ammo etc. He and a number of the other locals were having a good crack at it but could not in a short space of time manage anywhere near the numbers expected.

Now that the season is well under way it will just be the normal amount of shooting and I believe there is talk about being a bit better orginised for next year.
