Well the US argument seems to be arm more people and they will shoot the shooter....... the Gun control lobby has shrunk in the last 20 years, the number of Concealed carry permits has grown.

Easier to get than a UK SGC..........

More concealed carry permits in florida than SGC in UK (and 1/3 the population)

What difference do you think more restrictive gun laws would make. ?

well how many serious shootings have happened since Dunblane a very small comparison compared to the USA ?? Changing the gun law seems to have worked here, don't get me wrong im a serious gun fanatic being an air rifle to even a cannon ! But enough is enough sometimes and time has shown its worked here so why not over in the USA .

What makes people go into schools and shoot children and how do you legislate that kind of aberration away? It seems such an utterly extraordinary thing to do you have to ask what is happening in American society to make this almost a routine crime.

Its all very well introducing gun control which no doubt Obama at the start of a new term with the strength of a brand new mandate behind him will almost certainly do, but how has America come to specialise in this bizaare ritual? There must be something wrong beyond the proliferation of guns.

I don't believe it has worked. I think we just 'work' in a different way to US society.

You are not comparing like with like the population of America is around 311,591,917 you would expect more shooting incidents.

How has it worked here. A gunman killed at least 12 people in a shooting spree in Cumbria and injured another 25 before taking his own life.

Even if you remove all legally owned firearms they can be got illegally.

thats 3 defiantly as the Manchester 2 police women are only a stones throw away from me and friend of a friend as well , compared to the USA it's not a patch on what they go though day in day out.

I would love to see conclusive and independent evidence that its made any difference in this country ?

It hasn't. Gun crime with illegal weapons is rife but for some reason in this country it is only crimes committed with licensed guns which attract any attention. Its like the scene in Carry on up the Khyber where they're being shelled as they eat dinner and everyone dusts themselves off politely pretends not to notice that the building is collapsing around them.

there are lots more and the US is more like the whole of europe where generally the laws are less strict than the UK more so than the US. its not a clear comparison or anywhere near that simple. Gun crime actually rose after dunblane it didnt fall.

we'll start with a gun amnesty, and take all the legal guns off the law abiding. And we'll end up with the same situation as the UK .Only the criminals will have them. NOT

I feel more comfortable walking around here than I ever did in places like London,Manchester ,Newcastle or Liverpool.People are more tolerant here and most seem to mind there own business, yes you do get shootings, but it's no different to other places that have bad people that would do you harm.

In what way shape or form has it "worked"? Overall gun crime, especially handgun crime has certainly not dropped since the bans, it has infact tripled. And mass shootings have always been an absolute rarity throughout British history, even before the semi-auto and handgun bans, Hungerford was really the first of its kind for this country.

You know what would be productive? If everyone stopped jerking each other off about gun laws and started talking about putting more money into identifying and treating mental illness, ever more so in a country with no national health care system.

But that would not only be an intellegent conversation to have, but also rational and productive use of our time and intelligence, so I know that this comment will be mostly ignored on this forum, and ever more so in the states.

I'm sure you've all seen it now on tv , very very sad for the children lost in the shooting that's just happened , surely the president will seriously think about changing the gun laws .

No, he won't. Here's two articles on why he won't.

I can't see any gun laws changing in the US. There are so many weapons out there and you can walk through places like Basspro with a supermarket trolley and load it up with ammo, if you can find it because it flies off the shelf. After 9/11 the ammo shelves emptied as quick as they stocked them.
